Marriage of Gov. Ligon
The Annapolis Gazette thus announces an event which has heretofore been briefly referred to:
"
His Excellency, Thomas Watkins Ligon, Governor of Maryland, was married at 10 o'clock am on Tuesday, 31st Ult., by the Rev. Hugh T. Harrison, at St. John's Church, Howard county, to Miss Mary T. Dorsey, daughter of Col. Charles W. Dorsey of White Hall. His Excellency returned to the Goernment House on Tuesday evening accompanied by his bride, where they were visited by a number of citizens, members of the Legislature, and sojourners at the capital."

Gov. Thomas Watkins Ligon was the son of Thomas D. Ligon (1780-1811) and his wife, Martha Hughes Watkins (1784-1826).
His education was attained at Hampden-Sydney College, where he graduated in 1830, and at the University of Virginia and at Yale University, where he studied law. Ligon entered politics in 1843, serving as a member of the Maryland House of Representatives, a position he held until 1845. He also served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1845 to 1849. Ligon was elected governor of Maryland by a popular vote on November 2, 1853. He was sworn into office on January 11, 1854, becoming the first governor to be elected to a four-year term.
