Military Monday - Confederate - Surprise!

Jesse Carter Ansley was the son of Tillman Ansley (1798-1863) and his wife, Epsey Carter Ansley (1803-1866).  He was their third son, fifth child, born 28 Nov 1838 probably in Georgia.

Jesse enlisted 5 Apr 1862 in Henry County, Alabama and died 19 Sep 1863 in the Battle of Chickamauga.

I had been surfing around Footnote searching for a pension on another Jesse Ansley.  Imagine my surprise when I found these two documents.  I did have a death date on Jesse Carter Ansley, and it did match what was here, BUT I had no "reliable" source for my death date.  I had guessed that it was civil war related in my notes,  I had not really done anything to follow up on my note.   Now  I have the images to prove that my "hunch" was correct!   Clicking on the image will open larger image in new window.  Use your browers back button to return to Genealogy Frame of Mind.

AboveConfederate Statement of Service Reference Slip - note comment about death of soldier in handwriting on lower portion of slip.  Confirms death at Battle of Chickamauga.

Above: Confederate States Treasury Memo regarding service & death of Jesse C. Ansley 19 Sep 1863.  Notice the faded handwritten comments about enlistement date, term of service and death not being recorded.

I have not heard of either of these sources of service information!! How wonderful that you found them. I, too, surf Footnote, but I can't say I have run across anything like this for my ancestors. Are these state specific? What search words did you use? If my ancestors died in 1864 was it just too late in the war to leave this kind of paper trail?
Great post!

Kay, I was searching CONFEDERATE RECORDS on Footnote.com - searched using HIS NAME. No, I don't think his dying in 1864 was too late for this sort of paper trail. I'd keep searching.

Thanks!
