Thomas Ansley & the Georgia Rockhouse

Thomas Ansley, the builder of this "rockhouse" was my sixth great grandfather.  He migrated from Monmouth County, New Jersey to Warren County, Georgia.  His military marker headstone is located on this property as is the historical marker shown at the top of this post.
We visited the rockhouse in 2007 and took these photo's.

Love the house and love the sign. How exciting to have an ancestor as the subject of an historical marker.

Beautiful home! Where you able to peek inside at all? Is the house still in the family?

Dev, yes, you can go inside the house, I actually have some photo's of the inside and it is awesome! It is no longer "in the family", it is now owned by the state of Georgia.

Thanks for commenting.

The cemetery pictured with the title of your blog is just amazing! What cemetery is it?

Your blog is terrific!

Dorene, The cemetery featured at the top of my blog is Hill Grove cemetery in Miamisburg, Ohio. Many of my ancestors are buried there. I think its just awesome.

The photo was taken from the top of one of the many hills in the cemetery from whence it got its name.

Thank you for the kind words and for commenting.

We just visited in September/Oct. of this year. Went in it -- but I didn't see the marker.
My grandmother's maiden name was Ansley and I am working on genealogy; her father was Wm. Strain Ansley, his was David Ansley, then William Ansley, married to Sarah Strayhorn, then Wm. Ansley, married to Rebecca Cox. Can you help in placing Thomas in my line? Thnx. MHBB

Mary, you have things out of line just a wee bit, it should be THOMAS & REBECCA COX THEN WILLIAM and REBECCA (surname unknown). If you want to contact me directly you can email me at karenATmiprofgenieDOTcom and I'll be happy to help fill in the holes if you would like.

Thomas Ansley is also my great great great great grandfather on my father's side. I am actually doing a genealogical study of the Ansley family as part of a course I am teaching at Miami University in Ohio. Family legend has it that we are somehow related to Pres. Jimmy Carter. Do you know anything about this or where I can get a copy of the book A History of Descendants of Thomas Ansley?

Thomas is also in my family tree. I have the line as Thomas decendant from William Ansley and Elizabeth Cox and Elizabeth's parents as Thomas Cox and Rebecca Potts. Rebecca is the Child of Thomas Potts Jr. and Mary Records.

I am also related. I believe Thomas is my sixth great grandfather, by way of my mother. I am related to Thomas' son James, then Jame's son Asbury, then Asbury's son Francis and Francis' son Bradford, then Bradford's son Bradford Jr. and then my mother Frances. Anyway, it is exciting to learn about the stone house. Thanks for the info and nice photos.

If anyone wants to visit the graves of Asbury Ansley and his wife Ridley Riles Ivy they are in the Hanna Cemetery in Rising Fawn, Georgia.

As for the Carter connection, what I have found is that Thomas' granddaughter Ann married Wiley Cater who was the son of James Carter; James Carter being the relative that former President Jimmy Carter was named after. Thomas and this relationship are talked about on page 232 of Jimmy Carter's book "An hour before daylight: Memories of a rural boyhood."

It has been a long time since I have seen pictures of this house. I am so glad that I have found your site and been reminded of this house.

Thanks so much for posting this. My mother was Frances Ansley Walsh -the daughter of Albert Tharpe Ansley and Ada Mae Ansley. We're descendents of this branch through the Cox/Potts members. Most of the Ansley family that I knew is deceased so this post and the comments are very helpful and nice to see. We recently lost Aurelia Cooper around 2000. She was a great help to me with our family history and a childhood playmate of my mothers.

Wow, so many descendents here! Thomas Ansley is my 5x grandfather through my grandfather's side (Portwood family). Lydia Ansley is my grandfather's great-grandmother, and Thomas is her great grandfather.

I never knew a "family" home existed, so I will certainly be visiting the Rock House very soon!

Hi! Thomas is my ancestor, also. I grew up near the Rock House and saw out a few times.

Fate has brought me to Hillsborough, NC, where Ansleys go back to the 18th century. Please help me connect J. Weldon Seals to Thomas Ansley, if possible.

Thanks. Happy to see all you Ansleys searching in this place.

Hi, thank you so very much for posting this. I have recently been working on my husband's family genealogy for him and he was quite surprised to learn of the Rock House and about Thomas Ansley. He had NO IDEA about this family connection (Thomas Ansley's grandaughter, Marinda Ansley married into my husband's Watson family line). I did want to ask a question if possible. Has any information been discovered as to what William's wife's maiden name is yet? Again, thank you so very much in advance for your help and thanks again for posting this!! Brandi Whisenant Watson
