Treasure Chest Thursday - Declaration of Gratitude!

Many years ago when I began researching I had only two generations on most of my family.  Being the networker that I am using the internet became a vital tool for expanding my file.  One of my greatest "finds" was a cousin named Liz.   I've lost track of Liz for now, but I owe her a great deal.

My family are not "keepers", there aren't a lot of family heirlooms, and only a limited amount of old photo's.  But what I have I cherish!  The two items above came from Liz.  The man in the top photograph is my ggg grandfather, John Peterman.  John was born 26 Jul 1826 in Bavaria, Germany.  He died in German Township, Montgomery County, Ohio 16 APR 1902.  He was married 21 MAR 1852 in Montgomery County, Ohio to Henrietta M. Hegele. They were the parents of 9 children -
  Henrietta, Mary P., John G., Margaret C., Anna M., Roseanne L., Ida M., William H., and Lillian B.

The photo at the top is a photograph of a portrait that Liz had of John Peterman.  The lower image is of his Declaration of Intent.  The remainder of his "papers" have not been found.  But I'm thankful that I have these.

Liz, if you find this - I'm so thankful for these two items you shared with me.  Drop a note if you come across this, I'd love to hear from you!

Treasure Chest Thursday - Memories

As many know I spent some time last spring in Europe.  Belgium to be more exact.  While there we did do some "exploring".  One Friday the question was asked of me - "would you rather go to Paris or go find some ancestral churches?"   Gee that's tough...  I chose the churches of course!

In about 1725 in the village of Freckenfeld, Germany a child named Johann Michael Ott was born to parents Johann F. Ott and his wife Etta.  In my Treasure Chest Thursday entry for this week I offer these...

Yes indeed we visited the village where my ancestor(s) lived, walked and worshipped.   The road sign above shows the entryway into the village of Freckenfeld.  The one church in the village, according to signs at the church was built in the late 1600's.  And finally the bottom image of the cemetery, so very well tended.  And yes, there were quite a few names we recognized in the cemetery, most of them on the side of my 7th great grandmother, Maria Susanna Helck.   Maria & Johann Michael both came to the states and died in Frederick County, Maryland.   Paris or stand on the ground where my ancestors walked,....  yep, you guessed it - I chose to stand where they stood, walk where they walked.

Never in a million zillion years did I ever think that I would even step foot in Europe let alone visit the villages of my ancestors.  I am so thankful that the opportunity was offered and I was able to accept.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Nana's Triple Vase

Once again another of Mark's grandmother's items for the treasure chest.  This triple vase measures almost 11 1/2 inches tall.  It has three places where flowers can be placed.  I have not used the vase, it remains tucked safely away in my "treasure cabinet" out of reach of the grandkids.
If you've seen another vase like this and have any information on the vase I'd love to hear from you.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Promo Photo Eugene Krugman

One of my favorite treasures is this promotional photo of Eugene "Gene" Krugman.  Gene was an accomplished musician who played with several big name bands in the days of the big band.  I had mentioned him in a post on a message list a few years ago and a kind reader was an angel and sent this to me.  I am in contact with another person who is not related but is in possession of a few of Gene's instruments. Gene is a second cousin to Mr. Brown Eyes.  The photo is in perfect condition and is truly one of our treasures!

Treasure Chest Thursday - Nana's Tiny Tea Cups (#2)

Above another of Nana's tiny teacups sitting on its little "riser".
With a ruler you can see that the plate is barely three inches across. The same detail on the little saucer is repeated on the inside of the tiny cup.
Cup & saucer together, view looking down you can see the shape of the cup and the inside details matching the tiny saucer.
And finally the marking on the bottom. Most of Nana's tiny cups have some sort of mark on the bottom simular to this one.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Nana's Tiny Tea Cup

This tiny tea cup & saucer belonged to Mr. Brown Eye's grandmother.  We received it when she passed away several years ago.  The tea cup itself is about 1 3/4 inches tall and holds 2 1/2 Tablespoons of liquid.   The cup has a tiny chip in the rim but other wise is in perfect condition.  There are several other "sets" of this sort in the mini collection.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Bloss Miltenberger letter of 1849

I love surfing around on the internet, using my google search engine I find the neatest things.  One day it came to my attention that the letter shown below was up for grabs on ebay.  Went & took a look.  Checked against my data base, figured out who everyone was and decided to place a bid.  Obviously with the letter being on my blog, I won the bid and now this letter, from William R. Bloss, in Preble County, Ohio to his cousin, E. M. Miltenberger over in Warren County, Ohio is in my treasure chest.

The letter, postmarked & addressed on the back of the letter itself, then neatly folded into an "envelope" type form still bears the remains of the wax used to seal the letter closed.  It is dated Preble Co., August 14, 1849.   E. M is Emaline Matilda Miltenberger (1826-1891), who marries that November to Joshua Button.  William R. Bloss, who was born in 1822 is yet to be researched, although I do know of his siblings & parents.  They are both first cousins six times removed to me.

I did not scan the entire back of the letter only the part that I felt was important. Also the front has two (2) signatures at the bottom of the page which I was unable to capture on my scanner.  Remember that if you wish to enlarge the image, clicking will open it in a new, larger window.  Use your browsers back button to return to Genealogy Frame of Mind.

Happy Researching!
