Tombstone Tuesday

Final resting place of Alexander Lewis, Mayor of the City of Detroit 1876-1877. Born October 24, 1822 in Canada, the son of Thomas & Jeanette Lewis. Married Elizabeth J. Ingersol June 10, 1850. They were the parents of 13 children of which 8 lived to maturity. He died in 1900.
Distinct issue in the campaign was enforcement of laws having to do with the Sabath, "...especially the law providing for the proper observance of the Sabath..."*.
One of the better mayoral monuments found in Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit.
Drop by some Saturday down at Elmwood, its a beautiful walk among the old monuments and headstones - you might even learn some of Detroit's fascinating old history. If you stop in the office they have a brochure on all the Mayors & political figures buried here.
Happy researching!
