Death of Mrs. Winstead
A Good Woman Passed Away At a Ripe Old Age
Mrs. J. M. Winstead died Saturday night at 8 o'clock at the residence of Mr. B. H. Merrimon, 501 West Washington Street, at the age of 77 years. Her husband died several years ago. Her surviving children are Mr. P.H. Scales, of Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. W.F. Trogdon, of North Wilkesboro, and Mrs. B.H. Merrimon, of this city. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at the Merrimon home conducted by Rev. Dr. G.H. Detwiler, pastor of the West Market Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. S.H. Hilliard, of High Point. There was a large attendance of sorrowing friends and relatives. The interment was made in Greene Hill Cemetery.
[Note: Although this headstone shows the date of death to be June 30, 1907, the obituary from the newspaper clearly shows that this 1907 death date is incorrect. The image is available for viewing via Genealogybank.]

Maria Scales was a widow when she married James Monroe Winstead on 16 MAR 1875 in Guildford County, North Carolina. It is unknown to me who her parents were. Her husband, James Monroe Winstead was the son of Samuel Winstead and Elizabeth Sargent. James died 23 AUG 1894 and is also buried in Greene Hill Cemetery.
