Tombstone Tuesday - George Gates 1810-1877

George Gates, my 4th great grandfather is buried in Roselawn Cemetery, Preble County, Ohio.  George is a mystery man - as I have no clue who his parents are.  With him dying 22 OCT 1877, there was no real death certificate so locating parents names isn't possible that way.   Let me tell you what I do know.

George was born 17 JAN 1810, from calculations based on his age at the time of death (67y/9m/5d).  Some sources say he was from Adams County, Pennsylvania others say Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

I have two "obits" for George, one I know the source of, the other came in an email, but the address so longer works.  They basically give the same info -

George Gates, died October 22, near Lewisburg, age 67 years 9 months, 5 days. Born in Adams Co., Pennsylvania in 1810, emigrated to Ohio in 1827.  Married Feb. 13, 1840. Had 9 children. Totally blind for 4 years.  Buried at Lewisburg.
[This "obit" was found in my obits in an email letter.  Email address is no longer working.]
          ************************
From the Dayton Daily Journal, Nov. 2, 1877, Pg. 1, Col. 6:
"GATES, Near Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio, Oct. 22, 1877. Mr. George Gates, Aged 67 years 9 months 5 days."

So as you can see neither leads me to his parents.  Here's the rest of what I know....

He marries Luezer (yep, that's her name!) Fowler, daughter of Joseph Fowler on 13 FEB 1840 in Preble County, Ohio.

They are the parents of 9 children -
Hannah Angeline (my ancestor), Minerva, Oliver, Elzina, Francis, George, Mary, Martin and Elmira.  All married and had families except Mary Isabella.

Luezer is buried with him as well.  But her stone and story are a different day, different blog entry.

Do you know George?  IS he perhaps in your file?  Maybe your ancestor married into the family?
Can you help locate the family that George came from?  I'd love to hear from you if you do!

Happy Researching!

Tombstone Tuesday - Forgive & Forget - Doesn't Appear So!

Headstone Ann Margaret "Martha" Cook
1774-1863

The headstone of my 5th great grandmother, Ann Margaret "Martha" Cook.  She was married to my 5th great grandfather, Christian W. Cook.  I wish I could tell you who her parents were, but I don't know.

Margaret dies 13 NOV 1863 at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 2 days.  She rests in Slifers Cemetery, Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.  Her husband, Christian rests in an unmarked grave next to her (according to the readings I have found).

Margaret left a will, dated 21 JUN 1852, Montgomery County Will book Vol. G, Pg 17.  In it she names her children - Ann Margaret, Henry, Frederick, Elizabeth (heirs of),  Mary (heirs of), John (Heirs of), Sarah, Christina and Michael.  She names one other daughter, Catherine Cook Boomershine, but leaves her and her family only $1 in her will.

I believe the following had something to do with that decision:
"Boomershine, Abraham & wife, Catherine vs Margaret Cook et al 28 MAR 1849. Petition for partition for 1/10th share of SE 1/4 S23 T4 R4 -160 acres owned by Christian Cook dec'd. in Jackson Twp. Left widow Ann Margaret......."

Seems Margaret didn't take lightly to that little challenge and didn't forget about it either!  I wanted the paper to prove the relationship but I'd rather have found it shown in other ways!

Tombstone Tuesday - Clay & Powell

Headstone images by Mark Krugman
2008

The joint stone inscriptions for Jesse H. Powell & his wife, Nancy "Nannie" Clay Powell.
Jesse married Nancy Clay, daughter of Edmund B. Clay & Sarah Jones in 1867 in Decatur County, Georgia.  They rest together in Bethel Baptist Cemetery, Decatur County, Georgia.
Nancy is a second cousin several generations removed.

                         BELOVED WOMAN PASSES TO BEYOND
MRS. JESSE H. POWELL PASSED AWAY AT CYRENE, SATURDAY, JULY 10TH

In the death of Mrs. Nannie Clay Powell, Cyrene and community have lost one of their most prominent citizens. As a result of a third strike of paralysis, the end came on Saturday afternoon, July 10th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Donalson, in Cyrene. The news of her death brought a shock to the community though she had been in very poor health for more than a year.

Mrs. Powell was born and raised in Talbot county and shortly after the Civil War came to Decatur county with her two brothers, David and John Clay. In 1867 she was married to Mr. Jesse H. Powell, and together they established a home known by many for its royal hospitality and prominence in the upholding of the section and community. For forty years this Christian couple lived and taught by precept and example, the blessed truths of righteousness. No begging hand ever left this home empty nor was a deaf ear ever turned to a needy call. Two citizens have invested their lives in a most genuinely useful and helpful way than did this Godly couple. Since childhood, she had been an active and consistent member of the Baptist church. Nothing brought to her more pleasure than serving in some capacity for the progress and maintenance of her church.

She leaves two sons, W. G. Powell, of Cyrene and J. T. Powell, of Brinson and eight daughters, Mrs. E. S. Perry, of Iron City; Mrs. E. Rich, Mrs. A. J. Rich, Mrs. J. B. L. Barber, of Bainbridge; Mrs. P. D. Rich, of Colquitt; Mrs. W. C. Sims, of Brinson; Mrs. J. B. Donalson, of Cyrene; Mrs. Walter Love, of Jacksonville, Fla.; more than thirty grandchildren and great-grandchildren loudly lament the loss of this admirable woman.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Bethel church, conducted by her pastor, Rev. H. H. Shell, of Bainbridge. By six of her stalwart grandsons, her body was borne to the grave and there deposited by the side of her husband, who preceeded her several years.

Tombstone Tuesday - John W. Kreitzer, No Longer Missing!

John W. Kreitzer & his wife, Mildred R. Kreitzer are the featured headstone today.  Work on this couple & their family is a real work in progress.

Several weeks ago Mr. Brown Eyes and I went down to Dayton to visit a good friend who had recently been released from the hospital.  After a nice visit and lunch we headed back to his home.  Having recently moved we decided to do a quick drive thru the cemetery that is located on the street behind his home.  With him being a genealogist as well,  we found it to be a nice drive.

Partially thru the cemetery we came across this stone.  I know who John W. Kreitzer's parents are, I just had no idea what had happened to him.   This headstone is not on Find A Grave so my searches there for him always went no where.

A search of death records on FamilySearch.org gave me full death dates on both, but so far no obits.  So I'll be adding them to my obit search list for Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio.  Gee, another research trip for next summer!  Break my heart!

John W. Kreitzer (16 OCT 1907 - 3 FEB 1979) is the son of John D. Kreitzer (1878-1962) and Minnie M. Stauffer (ca 1885 - ?).  Mildred's parents are unknown to me as of this writing, but she was born in 1911 and died 5 JUN 1979.

If you have further information on this couple I'd love to hear from you!

Tombstone Tuesday - Big Spring Church Cemetery, Claiborne Co., TN

This is pretty much all that's left of the Big Spring Church Cemetery, a few small headstones here and there.  The meeting house is still standing after all these years.  Over in one corner you find this large stone. I find it interesting as the stone clearly states, the memorial is for "...Pioneers buried in the Reuben Floyd Stone Family Cemetery".   Many Hurst and Breeding family members are buried in Big Spring Cemetery and they intermarried with the Stone family.   Below is the old Big Spring Church meeting house. From the air conditioner in the window it would suggest that perhaps the church is still in use today.
