Tombstone Tuesday - George Gates 1810-1877

   George Gates, my 4th great grandfather is buried in Roselawn Cemetery, Preble County, Ohio.  George is a mystery man - as I have no clue who his parents are.  With him dying 22 OCT 1877, there was no real death certificate so locating parents names isn't possible that way.   Let me tell you what I do know. 

  George was born 17 JAN 1810, from calculations based on his age at the time of death (67y/9m/5d).  Some sources say he was from Adams County, Pennsylvania others say Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. 

  I have two "obits" for George, one I know the source of, the other came in an email, but the address so longer works.  They basically give the same info -

   George Gates, died October 22, near Lewisburg, age 67 years 9 months, 5 days. Born in Adams Co., Pennsylvania in 1810, emigrated to Ohio in 1827.  Married Feb. 13, 1840. Had 9 children. Totally blind for 4 years.  Buried at Lewisburg.

  From the Dayton Daily Journal, Nov. 2, 1877, Pg. 1, Col. 6:
  "GATES, Near Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio, Oct. 22, 1877. Mr. George Gates, Aged 67 years 9 months 5 days."

So as you can see neither leads me to his parents.  Here's the rest of what I know....

He marries Luezer (yep, that's her name!) Fowler, daughter of Joseph Fowler on 13 FEB 1840 in Preble County, Ohio. 

They are the parents of 9 children - 
Hannah Angeline (my ancestor), Minerva, Oliver, Elzina, Francis, George, Mary, Martin and Elmira.  All married and had families except Mary Isabella. 

Luezer is buried with him as well.  But her stone and story are a different day, different blog entry.

Monday Musings

WOWSERS!  Last week just flew by!  I've got two more days on my series on how to not feel overwhelmed - both in genealogy and in your daily life.  We still have "Make Lists" & "Say NO" to cover. 

Last week was a good one, I got tons of stuff typed and edited and ready to be added to my data base.  I'm working on a number of projects, which is really nothing new.  Its just good to finally see it linked and added to the data base.

The youngest grandson decided to just stand up in the middle of his parents kitchen floor this past Saturday and start walking!  I had just crossed over the border back into the states when the video popped up on my phone.  So excited to watch that!  Soon he'll be up and running with the other grandsons!  They grow up so fast! 

On the way home from our temp location in Burlington, Canada we stopped in a small place to eat. Nothing big, nothing fancy, but the place just stayed busy all the time we were there.  Looking around I stumbled on a chalkboard drawing with some holly on it.  In the middle of all the holly and stuff were the following words - 12 FRIDAYS TILL CHRISTMAS!  

WHAT!?!?!?!?

Needless to say I was about blown off my chair.  It can't be.  Not that soon!  Alas I'm afraid tis true. 

   Oh well,  where has the year gone!   I'm back to my typing blogs!   Don't forget to watch for the last two blogs in the  Overwhelmed series!

Military Monday - Confederate Pension Martha J. Clay (1919)

  Personally before me comes Mrs. Martha J. Clay of said State and County, and, after being duly sworn, says that she desires to apply for a pension allowed under the act of 1910, as amended by Act of 1919, and submit testimony to make out the same, true answers makes to the following questions to-wit -
 1. What is your name,  and where do you reside?  Martha J. Clay  Decatur County, Georgia
 2. How long and since when have you been a continuing resident of the State of Georgia?  All my life 70 years
 3. When, where and to whom were you married?  In Decatur County, Georgia to David H. Clay March 1876.
 a. Have you married since the death off first and soldier husband? No
 4. When, where and in what company and Regiment did your husband enlist as a soldier in Confederate Army or Georgia Militia? (State the arms and class of service) At Decatur Georgia September 1861, Co. H 13th Georgia Infantry, obtained from husband after we were married in 1876.
 5. When and where did the commands of your husband surrender or discharge from the army?  I don't remember
 6. Was your husband personally present at the time of the surrender or discharge of this command?  Don't know
 7. If he was not present state clearly where he was? Don't know
 8. Where was his command when he left? Don't know
 a. For what cause did he leave his command? Don't know
 b. By whose authority did he leave his command? Don't know
 c. For how long was he granted leave of absence?  -----
 e. What was his physical condition when he left his command? Don't know
 f. What effort did he make to return to his command? ----
 g.. In what way was he prevented from going back to command? ----
 h. Was he captured by the enemy at any time?  Don't know
 i.  If so, when and where captured and where held as a prisoner, and when and for what cause released? ---
 j. When and where did your first husband die?  He died in Decatur County, Georgia in 1903
 k. Were  you residing together when he died?  Yes

 9.  Have you or your husband heretofore been paid a pension by the state?  No

George Gates - Whose Son Are You?

 

George Gates, died October 22, near Lewisburg, age 67 years 9 months, 5 days. Born in Adams Co., Pennsylvania in 1810, emigrated to Ohio in 1827.  Married Feb. 13, 1840. Had 9 children. Totally blind for 4 years.  Buried at Lewisburg.

 George Gates is my fourth great grandfather, and I'd love to know who his parents were. Maybe you can help me?  The obits above give a very general view of what  I know about George.  So let me give you some more facts. 

• Born according to calculations etc on 17 JAN 1810, in Adams County, Pennsylvania if you believe what is in that newspaper blurb.  
• Married 13 FEB 1840, in Preble County, Ohio to Luezer Fowler, daughter of Joseph Fowler.  And yes, that's really her name and its even on her headstone spelled exactly like that! 
• They were the parents of nine children all living to adulthood - 

1. Hannah Angeline Gates - married Levi Kesler (my ancestors)
2. Mary Jane (Minerva) - married John Parks
3. Oliver Clinton - married three times, Rebecca J. Bantz, Sarah Wilkinson and Amanda House
4. Elzina Mariah - married Stephen Minton Parks
5. Francis Marion - married Samantha Swihart
6. George Ferdinand - married Elmire Isabell Richards
7. Mary Isabella - never married
8. Martin Inman - married Malinda J. Beam
9. Elmira Melissa - married Mr.Horn

• George died, according to all accounts,  22 OCT 1877, Harrison Township, Preble County, Ohio.  He was followed on 09 JUL 1889 by his wife, Luezer.  They are buried together in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio.  Luezer died of Dropsy.  George's cause of death is currently unknown. 

I know about all there is to know about George Gates except who his parents were...  Maybe you can help?  

Levi Kesler Obituary (1905)

WEST MANCHESTER    Levi Kesler, who lived two miles south east of this place, died suddenly last Sunday evening.  He had not been well for several years and was here to see a doctor last Friday.  On Saturday he suddenly became worse and lived but a short time.  Mr. Kesler was 70 years of age and had lived all his life in Washington, Jefferson and Monroe Townships.  Since last October three brothers of the Kesler family, Daniel, Samuel and Levi have passed away. **New Paris Mirror,(Preble County, Ohio), Thursday, 2 MAR 1905, Pg.8, Col. 5 Levi Kesler was mmy GGG grandfather. Born in Washington Township, Preble County, Ohio on 3 NOV 1834, he spent nearly his entire life in Preble County. He married there, 30 OCT 1862 to Hannah Angeline Gates (1841-1919), and they were the parents of six children. Hannah & Levi are both buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Lewisburg, Preble County, Ohio.

Wishful Wednesday -

Thought I would take a few minutes and make my genealogy wish list - just in case any of the genealogy fairies are listening and have a mind to grant some wishes - here's my wish list...

• What happened to Joseph Ansley? I know he married Marietta Waddell and had two sons, I know she remarried, I know what happened to both boys. What happened to Joseph & when? Where?
• What's up with J.G. Waddell and his using J.G. Gamble name both on a census and for his service in the civil war? Who are his parents?
• Who are the parents of Jonathon G. McCune? Does he descend from the Darke County, Ohio McCune's or is he straight out of Ireland? Is the John McCune buried in the Infirmary Cemetery in Montgomery County, Ohio really MY John McCune?
• What about Rebecca Tanreuther McCune? Why did "friends" take her away after her death? Why wasn't her husband taking care of that? Where did her "friends" take her & bury here?
• Does my George Gates belong to the Gates family that founded Gatesburg in Centre County, Pennsylvania and if so how?

Resource!

When you see me post something that says Resource in the title you can be sure its a post on another great website with free records for you to use in your research. This one is from Preble County, Ohio. Give it a look see even if you don't have anyone who wandered over there YET!

The Preble County District Library has set up a collection entitled, "Genealogical & Historical Records of Preble County, Ohio". This collection is fabulous! It contains records such as marriages, obituaries, cemeteries, census, bible and more. A collection defintely worth checking out! The images are scanned images of the records in a fully searchable data base and date back into the early 1800's.

I've spent several days working on this site and here's a few examples of what I have found.

This marriage record between David Geeting & Christina Bickle dated August 1848. I've seen earlier records than this in the data base but you can see how nice the images are. Obituaries are very well done as well. Look at this one for Martin Gates who just happens to be a great uncle who dies in 1950.

A key on the website gives you the sourcing for all entries - abbreviations telling you which newspapers etc., that things were found in.

A very nice nice site indeed - especially if you find great scans of material handled in a way that makes searching easy & fast! No complicated formula's, no messy material - just great material presented in a fabulous format! What more could a genealogist ask for???
