On The Road Again!

The plants are watered, the laundry is all done, the suitcases are packed.  The alarm is set, garage door is down...  and we are off.  Actually we've been on the road now for 10 whole research filled, fun days.  Days full of meeting people, researching and just enjoying being out & about. 

The primary time spent so far has been on the ancestors & their families in Montgomery County, Ohio.  With so many ancestors there we've been spending lots of time there.  This time however, had to be the best!

I've been searching for a repository for the Germantown Press, the newspaper for Germantown, Ohio for quite a few years.  This past Thursday, the librarian at the Montgomery County Genealogy Center, found the paper at Wright State University. 

On Friday morning we set out for Wright State.  After breakfast and a wrong turn into Wright Patterson AF base we finally arrived.  We went in search of a visitors parking pass, got it and managed to locate the library.  The staff was helpful and courteous.

At long last I was able to get to the Germantown papers.  I really like it when I find a "one stop shopping" location for the newspapers in the area's I'm researching.  On Friday, I finally found that for the Montgomery, Preble & Darke county area's of Ohio.  Wright State University library fits the bill perfectly!  We will be back!

Monday Musings

Happy Monday to everyone!  Hope your weekend was great.  The snow is melting here and temps are on the rise. Maybe winter is on the way out!  One can hope eh?

Spent much of this past week working on linking and naming images.  Seems as though that is a never ending process.  I use it not just for genealogy but for recipes as well.   Once I type them in to my recipe data base I link the scanned images to the recipes.  Works great!

On the genealogy front,  I'm cleaning up my digital files and image folders.  Somehow, there's always a duplicate or two.  So I'm getting rid of some, recropping some and some just linking.

Going to work on some genealogy this morning.  Have more digital images that I want to take care of.  Its nice not having tons of papers laying all over, but the number of images can at times be overwhelming.  In the long run it will all be worth it when I am done.

The next major project is going thru every photo and making sure they are linked as they should be.  I don't anticipate this taking more  than 2 years or so, working an hour or two every day.  But it will be worth it.  Going to start with all the cemetery & headstone images first.

Oh well,  keeps me out of trouble for the most part, and I know when I'm done it will be an awesome thing.   I'm doing a wee bit of research here and there, mainly figuring out the "unknown's" in my file.  I keep a file of the unknown's with the surnames I am working on.  Basically in the area's where I know our lines are, I come across a headstone or a death certificate or obit and I try to figure them out and add them to my regular file.  Love the challenge of figuring those out.

Maybe the luck of the Irish will be with me today while I work on some of those...  one can only hope eh?

2015 - Out With The Old & In With The New

Happy New Year!

We were talking with some friends the other day about just how quickly time passes.  Seems like yesterday we were all wondering what the effects of going from 1999 to 2000 would be.  Hard to believe that it is now 2015.  Time sure flies!

This year will bring a (hopefully soon) new grandson for us.  He's due in late January.  What a great thing that will be! 

As many of you have done we've been cleaning - the bringing of the new year some how seems to make us want to make changes.  We've been emptying closets, donating "stuff",  reorganizing and rethinking how we do things.  Makes for lots of changes in our household.  Mostly good things.  

Every year I am always anxious to see what new information for genealogy is going to appear on line.  Will this be the year I discover the ancestry of John McCune?  John Hess?  John Peterman?  (see a pattern here?).  One can only hope that perhaps one of those walls will be coming down.  I can only hope. 

I'm hoping this year to be more informative on the blog, more consistancy with the posts, more information in the posts.  My goal right now is to redefine the way my office is organized,  be more efficient with my time useage,  and more organized with the way I do things.  Somehow we always seem to think that we have everything the way we want it, then something happens and a lightbulb comes on in our heads.  Suddenly everything isn't as efficient as we'd like it to be.  And so it goes.

Technology Tuesday - IPhoto - It's So Easy!

First of all,  this "blog" entry is heavy on images today.  So if you are on dial up you may have trouble with delayed loading.  So you've been warned.

I've always been a windows user, UNTIL about a year and a half ago my son introduced me to the world of MAC.  I love my MAC.  There was a bit of a learning curve, won't deny it.  And I must say I'm still learning.  The hardest thing for me was not having that photo editing software to work with.  I'm a creature of habit, once I find something that works for me, I don't change it. Ever.  Well toss that out the window.  Being on this Mac I had to change my editing software.  No choice. 

So I sat down one day  and went thru the video's at UTube until I found some on using iPhoto.  Wow.  If you get someone who really knows their stuff you can conquer about anything.  So let me show you how I learned to work with my images in iPhoto!

First thing you have to do is figure out where you have the images you want to work on and then where you want them to go when you are done with them.  Once you have that you've got it made.  Now comes the fun part.  So here we go!  The captions UNDER each photo will explain the process for that screen....  READY?

 Above -  The screen that starts it all.  Ignore the "Recent". Look at the pull down window.  See where it says, IMPORT TO LIBRARY?  Yeah that one.  Click on it.  When you do it opens .....

 Yep, it opens this window above.  I have a windows photo storage thing going on here so I follow the path to where the photo's are stored.  In this case I had previously removed some images from flash drive #3 and stored them as you  see above.  So I followed the path  you see above and clicked on that folder.  It will immediately grab those photos (yes that entire file folder) and import them into iPhoto.

Once your download is complete you will see your photo's displayed as you see above.  Up in the right corner it will even tell you how many photo's you have in that download.  Next you need to choose the image that you want to edit.   You need to choose the photo that you need to edit.  When you click on the photo, it will put a yellow "frame" around it. 

After you see the yellow frame, look down into the bottom right hand corner of your iPhoto screen.  You want to find the image you see above.  Pretty straight forward eh?  You want to click on EDIT.

 Once you click on EDIT,  the the window above will appear.  Not rocket science at all.  It does exactly what it says it will do.  The primary ones I use are straighten and crop.  It should offer a bit of comfort knowing that you can always UNDO or REVERT TO ORIGINAL. 

As you can see in my image above the headstone photo is a bit off kilter.  So I've chosen "straighten".  The Slider bar and grid on the screen make it easy to straighten about any image you have need to.  Not complicated, simple and functional.  Just what the technology challenged need! 

 Once you have finished straightening you click on Crop and the window you see on the right opens.  It gives you all sorts of choices.  You can start at the top of the list and work your way down.  As you choose you can see right on your screen what it will be like on your image.  How can you miss it when its showing you as you do it?  When you get it done the way you like, you simply click DONE.  That's it.  You edited your photo and had no strokes or heart attacks.  No you are ready to move the images you've edited into a folder.  Once again you'll have to decide where to put the photo's. 

 Next step is back to the window again.  File>EXPORT.... yep you are going to send the images to a new home.  No stress, No worry!  Its really quite simple.  Click on Export and you'll get another window....

When you get this window you've really been busy.  So you choose the kind of picture - I chose TIFF, but Jpg and others are in there as well.  I always mark HIGH QUALITY, and I include Title & Keywords and Location information. I also tell it to USE FILENAME......

Finally It will say SAVE AS....  and you name the image you want to send and where it is going.  Be careful here, because once you fill these in and click OK.... the images will be moved INSTANTLY. 

SEE, I told you it wasn't that big a deal.  And once you do it a couple of times it makes things so easy!   Hope this helps.  I'm not the biggest techie in the world but when I find something and it works I like to share it.  I know that not everyone likes or uses iPhoto,  but if you've thought about it, now might be a good time to give it a try!

Monday Musings

WOWSERS!  Last week just flew by!  I've got two more days on my series on how to not feel overwhelmed - both in genealogy and in your daily life.  We still have "Make Lists" & "Say NO" to cover. 

Last week was a good one, I got tons of stuff typed and edited and ready to be added to my data base.  I'm working on a number of projects, which is really nothing new.  Its just good to finally see it linked and added to the data base.

The youngest grandson decided to just stand up in the middle of his parents kitchen floor this past Saturday and start walking!  I had just crossed over the border back into the states when the video popped up on my phone.  So excited to watch that!  Soon he'll be up and running with the other grandsons!  They grow up so fast! 

On the way home from our temp location in Burlington, Canada we stopped in a small place to eat. Nothing big, nothing fancy, but the place just stayed busy all the time we were there.  Looking around I stumbled on a chalkboard drawing with some holly on it.  In the middle of all the holly and stuff were the following words - 12 FRIDAYS TILL CHRISTMAS!  

WHAT!?!?!?!?

Needless to say I was about blown off my chair.  It can't be.  Not that soon!  Alas I'm afraid tis true. 

   Oh well,  where has the year gone!   I'm back to my typing blogs!   Don't forget to watch for the last two blogs in the  Overwhelmed series!

Friday Already?

I can't say I've done alot of genealogy this week.  I've been busy working at Ford - doing a little volunteer work.  Its good to give back to the community in some way, no matter if its big or small,  every little bit helps. 

One of the benefits of being able to volunteer where I do is that I do get a wee bit of down time here and there, so if I have my computer along (which I always do!) I can do a bit of surfing. 

One of my brick walls is the family of my third great grandmother, Henrietta Hegele.  I've not done alot of work on her line, I do know who her parents are, John George Hegele (b.ca 1801 Germany) and his wife, Henrietta.  Don't know her maiden name YET.  I also know that Henrietta has siblings, Christian, John, Christiana & Mary.    On one of my downtimes I decided to see if I could find them after they entered this country.  I knew when Henrietta married John Peterman (1852) but beyond that not much. 

I finally found them in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.  Now I have more definite dates and a place to begin searching for more information on the family.  A few minutes here and there sometimes yeilds more results than hours...  amazing.

Monday Musings

The past few weeks have just flown by.   I haven't done much genealogy, mostly I've been focused on removing all the papers from my office/desk area.  Going paperless is quite a chore.  I've made great headway and I'm happy to report that I've removed all the papers that are genealogy related.  I've got a few that aren't but those too will disappear in time.

I've scanned all those copies to my flash/thumb drives and I've began the task of transcribing, editing and linking them all to the persons/families in my data base.  Boy what a chore that is going to be!  But I know when its done I'll be thrilled.

I've written here before about my move from PC to Mac.  I still had my PC, mainly as a crutch and partly because I still had a file or two I wanted to get off.  It had been giving me "error" messages about a hard drive failure, which of course I didn't pay a lot of attention to.  Well it did crash.  To the point, AFTER it crashed I figured out that I had two files on there that I had not yet moved.  Luckily my techy son took care of that this weekend while he was here.

NOW, I have both of those files and I'm a happy camper.  I've been tracing the family of auto pioneer Henry Ford for many years, and that data base was one that was on the crashed PC, happily it now resides on my Mac!  Whew!

The shopping is done, the holiday parties are winding down (one more to go!) and now I can focus a bit on just chilling and getting some genealogy stuff done.

Monday Musings

It's been a crazy few weeks here hence the lack of blogs.  Thanks for your patience.  I've redone my email accounts, opened some new, got rid of some old, but the contact information here stayed the same.  Thankfully I've got a very techy son who saves my backside when I get in over my head on computer stuff. 

We've added another branch to our family tree.  Jacob Michael Luotonen weighed in at 8 pounds 2 ounces when he joined us on Saturday morning, September 28th, 2013.  He's adorable, looks just like his awesome mom!  Needless to say grandma can't stop smiling at the thought.  Holding him brings back so many memories of the three older grandsons when they were that size and of course our two kids when they were just infants.  Congrats to our daughter, Amanda and her husband, David on a job well done!

The scanning and re-organization project is ongoing. I think I finally have every loose paper from my summer research trips scanned to my flash/thumb drives.  Now the fun begins as I start to transcribe and clean up those images to link in my data base.

Speaking of databases, I've joined the Heredis for Mac beta test that is going on.  So far things look great, but my "test" file still has some issues I'm not thrilled with.  Heredis is a European Genealogy software that has recently come on to the US genealogy software scene.  It has great potential and I'm enjoying the experience thus far.

Mom has arrived from Florida for a few months. Its always great having her here to enjoy the holidays with us.  The grandsons think she's awesome and since she's the shortest one in the family at only 5'1 the oldest grandson thinks she's great - he's finally taller than one of the adults!

Genealogy Connections Are Everywhere!

A few days ago I decided to join a group on Facebook.  It was Technology For Genealogy, a great group, but alot of chatter.  I really had nothing in mind, just checking things out, looking to see if there was anything I needed to read.

As I scroll thru I read names, alot of familiar faces on that board!  Imagine my surprise when I come across someone with the surname Boomershine!  I was totally shocked.  I'd not seen anyone with that surname on ANY board anywhere before.

Being the good genealogist that I am I quickly sent off a note to the person. A bit later she replied!
Long story short, we've been chatting - and yes, I have her husband and his Boomershine family in my computer.  Missing dates and a few maiden names but she's helping me with that!   The other plus, her sister in law married into the Apple family - another of my surnames!  Double win!

See, genealogy connections are everywhere - and I love it when they come about just out of the blue!  So glad to have met you Lorraine!

Treasure Chest Thursday - Declaration of Gratitude!

Many years ago when I began researching I had only two generations on most of my family.  Being the networker that I am using the internet became a vital tool for expanding my file.  One of my greatest "finds" was a cousin named Liz.   I've lost track of Liz for now, but I owe her a great deal. 

My family are not "keepers", there aren't a lot of family heirlooms, and only a limited amount of old photo's.  But what I have I cherish!  The two items above came from Liz.  The man in the top photograph is my ggg grandfather, John Peterman.  John was born 26 Jul 1826 in Bavaria, Germany.  He died in German Township, Montgomery County, Ohio 16 APR 1902.  He was married 21 MAR 1852 in Montgomery County, Ohio to Henrietta M. Hegele. They were the parents of 9 children -
  Henrietta, Mary P., John G., Margaret C., Anna M., Roseanne L., Ida M., William H., and Lillian B.

The photo at the top is a photograph of a portrait that Liz had of John Peterman.  The lower image is of his Declaration of Intent.  The remainder of his "papers" have not been found.  But I'm thankful that I have these.

Lillie B. Peterman

Miss Lillie B. Peterman of Germantown Rt. 1, died at the Friendly Nursing Home in Miamisburg at 12:05 p.m., Saturday, March 1.

Miss Peterman, who was 83, had lived at the nursing home since 1956 and had been in failing health seven years.

She was the daughter of the late John and Henrietta Hagele Peterman, pioneer residents of German Township. She was a member of St. John's Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Surviving is one brother, William, with whom she resided.

Kissin' Cousins

I have friends that also blog and do genealogy.  It amazes me how after a time we seem to find links between us. We knew going in that two of the friends were linked, Anne & Carol. Then we discovered a link between Carol at Reflections and myself.  After a while we discovered that Anne over at Gene Notes is related to my husband Mark.  Yesterday we discovered yet another link between the two lines.

Anne and I both have the Early surname but we just can't seem to link them together.  It seems no matter where we go I find someone who can link into Mark's tree.  Our friend Lisa came over, we were talking genealogy and her tree links into Mark's Ligon tree.  We went to church, discussing genealogy with a lady there, she links in with the Powell line that Mark has.  So does her husband.

Our friend's Chuck & Diane are also active in the genealogy hunt.  We found a link between Diane & Mark, although it is thru Mark's stepgrandfather.  Don't get me wrong,  I'm thrilled to find all those connections for Mark's tree.

Isn't anyone related to me?  Is anyone out there researching Boomershine, Kreitzer, Peterman, Ansley, Nix or any of my other surnames?  How about Regan connections in North Carolina or  Hess in Virginia & Ohio?  I guess for now I'll have to settle for more connections to Mark's tree.  After all, I guess that's better than nothing.

Travel Thursday - Dayton Archives & Record Center

Last week Mark & I traveled down to Dayton to the Archives & Record center.  I must say it was a very successful trip.  I promised you an update on last Friday but we overslept so the blog remained undone!

This trip to the Archives we tried to stick pretty close to the goal of locating direct line ancestors, and I must say we did pretty well.  There are a few marriages that I now believe took place in one of the nearby counties, but for the most part we found lots of goodies!

We found wills on two (2) of my great grandmother's, Henrietta Hagele Peterman doesn't name my ancestor, only her "children" in general with the exception of her son, William Peterman & her daughters, Lillian and Ida.  Sure would have been nice to see her name Mary Pauline Kreitzer! 

Also located the will for Ann Margaret Cook.  Ann obviously held grudges.  Ann's daughter, Catherine and her husband, Abraham Boomershine, challenged Ann in court over some land held by Ann's husband Christian Cook.  The law suit took place in 1849.  Ann dies in 1863 and in her will declares that Catherine & Abraham Boomershine and their heirs are only to have $5.  All the rest of the estate to be equally divided among the other 5 living siblings.  Nasty!  Bet holidays were interesting at that house.

Also found wills for a couple of my grandfather's, although no real suprises there.

Verified & found the dates for several marriages of great aunts & uncles - had the marriages of most already. The ones I didn't find I'll check surrounding counties for. We also verified quite a few births and many death dates, along with getting full death dates that we only had years on. 

Copies were a dime each and we spent about $10 on copies. So all in all a very good trip.  I'm working my way thru them, sourcing and linking as I go! 

Throw in dinner with good friends & a hotel across the street & you've got a winner of a trip! Already working on my to do list for the next trip!

The death of John Peterman occured Wednesday evening.
Mr.Peterman was born July 26, 1826 and was therefore at the time of his death, 75 years, 9 months, and 20 days of age. 
He came to America in 1849 and on March 21, 1852 was united in marriage to Miss Henrietta Magdalene Hagle. In 1857 Mr. Peterman came to Germantown and for 5 years resided in the village. He then moved onto the farm about 3 miles northwest where he has resided ever since.
The funeral will be held from the house at 12 o'clock Saturday and from the Lutheran church at 1.
