The biggest focus of this entire trip is Georgia. The Georgia Archives and the National Archives (Southern) both have branches in Morrow (just south of Atlanta), in the same city, in the same parking lot. If it gets any better, I'm not sure how.
We made our first visit to the Georgia Archives last year and loved researching there. So when Mark said we could come back to research this year, I was not going to argue the point. Sure there are other places I could research, BUT why, when he's offering Georgia, would I argue?
So many brick walls here, so many pieces of missing information to be filled in, ancestors to be discovered. Well here we are, day one of the Georgia Archives research. Lets hope that success awaits us inside these doors. Trust me any goodies I find - YOU will be the first to hear it, right here on this blog. Unless of course you happen to be in the archives when I make my fabulous find!

Overwhelmed? Make Lists!
Step #4 of my five steps to help ease the feeling of overwhelmed was Make Lists! I'm a list maker. Always have been and I'm sure I always will be. Mr. Brown Eyes (my spouse) tells me that I have a ticker tape list running across my forehead the minute my feet hit the floor in the morning.
I'm not sure its quite that bad, but he is correct. When I hit the shower in the morning I pretty much know what my day is going to be like. I know what needs to be done, I know what I want to do and most of the time, baring any emergencies or such I pretty much get 'er done.
As I said before alot of this boils down to priorities. Its really pretty simple. What is important to you and how badly do you want to take care of those things?
My first list of the day is what do I need to get done as far as our home goes? Do I need to toss in laundry? Take out something for dinner? Put something in the crockpot? Do the bird feeders need filling? Are there any projects that I need to take care of? I have a pretty standard routine that takes place for cleaning, it's primarily a Monday morning thing. There's a list - Laundry gets started, dinner goes in the crockpot, dusting is done, usually the house cleaning is complete on Monday's by noon. There are several good sites with lists that can help with that. One that is very popular is the FlyLady site. She has lots of helpful ideas on getting your house in order & organized. Another is the Martha Stewart website. The link I provided links to her "lists", cleaning, organizing and more. Worth taking a look at if you are challenged in that area.
Once that is done then we look at genealogy. I've always got one major project going on in my office. I've currently got two major lists I'm working on. One is my "Michigan Research" list and the other is my "Medina County Ohio Research" list. Both of these are generated by my software. Another list that I like to generate from my software are "database" search lists. Not difficult to do, but oh so helpful. I will be doing a follow up post on generating those lists shortly. Those lists show me where my "holes" are and what I need to be looking for. We all have those holes in our research.
I also keep to do lists for ALL my favorite genie haunts. Those include Library of Michigan, Allen County (Ft Wayne), Indiana, Montgomery County Record Center & Archives (Dayton, Ohio), Medina County, Ohio public Library. Each repository that I have plans to visit has a to do list - some are obit search lists, some are vital record wants, some are major lists with books, microfilms and more on them. The lists include call numbers, newspaper names and details of what I want and why. Easily customized for all needs. I keep those in Evernote. Always accessible and available for spur of the minute "honey want to run off & research weekends?". Prepared? You better believe it!
Lists are just so important. Both in our genealogy and our personal lives. I've got my Christmas lists going already. Not what I want, but what do I have for each of my grandsons and kids. Can't really go into detail here because I do know my kids read this. I've got a little notebook sorta thingy that has a space for each person I shop for. I have written down the "gee, I could use that" stuff that I hear during the year, then as I find it it gets taken of that list and gets added to the BOUGHT list. So far no one has ever found that list. Comes in handy when you go out shopping and come back as to what goes to what grandson. I use my iPad for my grocery lists. Its great, it shows up on all devices so there's never a chance I don't have my list with me.
I try really hard not to make lots of paper lists but sometimes hard as I try I end up with post its on my desk for genealogy stuff I want to remember, for reminders, for blog topics that I want to write about (I've got one going right here next to my laptop now).
In short, you need to find a way to make lists that work for you. If its paper, if its electronic that works too. The main thing is that using lists helps keep you focused. Keeps you on track. I'm a visual person. Seeing it in front of me, whether on paper or on the iPad or in Evernote keeps me on track. With my list I can see my goals and where I stand. If I have a list of 12 things to do and my goal is done by noon, there's still four to go and its 11:15- I better get off the phone and finish that list. Yep, keeps me on track.

Monday Musings
WOWSERS! Last week just flew by! I've got two more days on my series on how to not feel overwhelmed - both in genealogy and in your daily life. We still have "Make Lists" & "Say NO" to cover.
Last week was a good one, I got tons of stuff typed and edited and ready to be added to my data base. I'm working on a number of projects, which is really nothing new. Its just good to finally see it linked and added to the data base.
The youngest grandson decided to just stand up in the middle of his parents kitchen floor this past Saturday and start walking! I had just crossed over the border back into the states when the video popped up on my phone. So excited to watch that! Soon he'll be up and running with the other grandsons! They grow up so fast!
On the way home from our temp location in Burlington, Canada we stopped in a small place to eat. Nothing big, nothing fancy, but the place just stayed busy all the time we were there. Looking around I stumbled on a chalkboard drawing with some holly on it. In the middle of all the holly and stuff were the following words - 12 FRIDAYS TILL CHRISTMAS!

Monday Musings
Been a busy few weeks here and an awesome weekend to top it all off. We've been staying busy with yard work. This past winter was so cold here in Michigan and the snow amounts were so bad... I know I've not seen this much snow here since I moved here 21 years ago. That said, our roses took a major hit. After much research and discussion we opted to cut them back drastically and see if maybe over the next few months they will come back. I'm pretty sure that at least two are done. We have many flower beds here at Karma Gardens and keeping up with them at times can be a daunting task. That's okay, the beauty they provide more than outweighs the work we do to keep them up.
Took a break from the upkeep of the property and went to Lansing on Friday and Saturday for the Summer Seminar put on by the Abrams Foundation & the Michigan Genealogical Council. What a great job they did. A wide variety of speakers covering a wide spectrum of topics. I think all the attendees really enjoyed themselves. Friday night was the lock in, 38 lucky persons were "locked" in the Michigan Archives for an evening of research. What a great evening.
There will be another seminar at the library on Saturday November 1st. All the details are in process but from what I saw at this past weekends seminar, the focus will be German & Pennsylvania research. Mark your calendars! I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Barn Sale to Goldmine
A few years ago a lady contacted me. She knew I was a Boomershine researcher. She had been to a barn sale in Preble County, Ohio and found this box of old photo's. The lady running the sale had wanted the photo's gone and she didn't want the family of her dec'd husband to have them. Seems the photo's were of his Boomershine ancestors.
She asked if I wanted the pictures so I said sure. The photo's came in a rather good size box (larger than a bread box!), and to my surprise almost everyone was dated and named as you can see below. I scanned them all, figured out the family that they belonged to and then returned them to the family.
They had no issues with my scanning the images and for that I do thank them AGAIN! A true goldmine of information.
Image below is of the Thomas Bratton & Ada Swisher family, taken according to the date on the photo, 29 AUG 1909. The daughter, Agnes Bratton marries Elmer Carl Boomershine - hence my interest. Very nice photo, and even more nice the identifying information found on the back of the photo!
Thomas Bratton (1886- ?) married to Ada Swisher (1888-1968) on 6 SEP 1905 in Preble County, Ohio. Their daughter, Agnes Naomi (1906-1948) married 21 MAY 1924 Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky to Elmer C. Boomershine (1904-1971). Elmer was the son of Alonidious Boomershine (1878-1958) and Temmie Hager (1879-1943).

Wedding Wednesday - Waddell & Ansley

Joseph & Marietta are my gggrandparents. Joseph the son of Rayford Ansley and his wife, Abigail Pressley. Marietta the daughter of James G. Waddell and his wife, Emeline.
Joseph & Marietta were the parents of two sons, my ancestor, William Ansley (1876-1963) and Andrew Ansley (ca1878-1894). Andrew never married or had children, he died at the age of 16 of dropsy. William married Margaret D. Johnson and they were the parents of 6 children, one of which was my grandfather, David C. Ansley.
Joseph Ansley's disappearance is one of my biggest and most challenging brick walls. If you have any information concerning him, I'd love to hear from you.

Wedding Wednesday
He stated that he married her to protect her. The image you see here is how most of their photo's were. At the time of her death in 2001 they had been married to each other for 68 years.
Both are gone now, and they are very much missed. They leave behind a multitude of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. What a legacy!

Pine Forest Cemetery, Grady County, Georgia - the final resting place of my great grandparents.
Although William died in 1963, and his illness & passing were reported in at least two of the local newspapers, the state of Georgia has never been able to produce a death certificate for him.
Thru the modern use of DNA we have been able to identify his lineage.
William Ansley & his wife, Margaret Johnson Ansley were the parents of 6 children: Callie (1901), William I.(1904-1997) marr 4 times to Margaret Carroll, Bessie, Etta Brinson, and Emma Byrum; Henry L.(1906-1991) marr Carrie M. Nix; Rhetta (1911-1997) marr Grady Davis & Tom Nicholson; David C. (1917-2008) marr Annie E. Nix; and Jim A.(1920-?) marr Eunice Allen & Madie Joiner.
David & Annie were my grandparents.

Pioneer Crisp Citizen Passes
Isreal Johnson, 82, pioneer citizen of this community died at his home near Cordele, Saturday. He was born and raised in this section and was a retired farmer.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.
He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Alice Dean, Winter Garden, Fla., Mrs. Margaret Ansley, Ochno____, Miss Clara Johnson and Miss Mae Johnson, both of Cordele; and three sons, I. Johnson Jr., L. B and David Johnson all of Cordele.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock from the graveside in Williford cemetery, coducted by Rev. A. B. Hosea.

That in consideration of Five dollars to me in hand paid and in further consideration of the benefits and advantages to access to me from the constriction of the Rail road hereafter named, I, Israel Johnson do hereby grant, bargain, sell and convey with the Americus Preston & Lumkin Railroad Company, the right of way which to construct and equip a Rail road through any land owned by me in the County of Dooly, the land hereby deeded and conveyed for such purpose shall exceed 100 feet on each side of the Cental of said Rail road and shall vest in said Rail road Company only for Rail road purposes. The Company or lessee accepting franchise under this conveyance shall be bound to construct and Keep in order all stock gaps which may be necessary to protect the property of Contiguous real estate useness. Looking at my Johnson's - Do I really need five Isreal Johnson's to contend with? Isn't one enough? Seriously the Johnson thing is bad enough, but add in Isreal... you get the picture. And then lets toss in the fact that there are even some Isreal Johnson's in the state of Georgia that aren't part of that particular line at all. I guess they just decided that they liked the name or something?
And what's with the Ligon's down in Virginia with the name William Ligon? So every family has a William and that William of course has a son William who also has a son William... and with a little luck they could all three be alive & living in the same county at the same time!
Just in case you think the females are safe forget it. Can't we be more original than Elizabeth, Eliza, Sarah, Sally & Susan.
Next time a relative of mine gives birth, I think I'll suggest something like Oscar or Ophelia...

Tombstone Tuesday
Headstone today is that of William Ansley, son of Joseph Ansley & Marietta Waddel. William is buried in Pine Forest Baptist Church Cemetery, Grady County, Georgia. He was married to Margaret D. Johnson. They were the parents of six children of which one is still alive.

Monday Madness
WILL THE REAL ISREAL JOHNSON PLEASE STAND UP?
When I first began researching this line I thought perhaps the hardest thing about the research would be the fact that it was the surname Johnson. Then I started to research in Georgia and I found out that no, the surname wasn't really the problem either.
The real problem is that in the state of Georgia, in the span of 100 years there are no less than eight or ten men living at any given time, all wearing the name of
ISREAL JOHNSON.
Alot of that time, the only thing you can use to distinguish between them is their ages, but some seem to be in the same age groups for multiple years. Toss in all the many ways you can misspell the name Isreal... Well you get the idea.
Finally the census comes into play with family names and you think AHHHHHH at last! I can compare children & wives & certainly that will straighten things out a bit. Really? You might think that but....
NO!
That would make things WAY too easy. I descend from Isreal Johnson (1859-1942), then his son, Isreal Johnson (1808-1885). He has a son Isreal too, but I don't descend from him.
Did I mention that I have a strong suspicion that I believe Isreal Johnson(1859-1942) is the son of an Isreal as well?
Proving the generations of Isreals can be a challenge but then if it wasn't a challenge it would not be much fun eh? So I'll keep searching & documenting. After all, I can't really be related to ALL OF THEM CAN I?
