On The Road Again!

The plants are watered, the laundry is all done, the suitcases are packed.  The alarm is set, garage door is down...  and we are off.  Actually we've been on the road now for 10 whole research filled, fun days.  Days full of meeting people, researching and just enjoying being out & about. 

The primary time spent so far has been on the ancestors & their families in Montgomery County, Ohio.  With so many ancestors there we've been spending lots of time there.  This time however, had to be the best!

I've been searching for a repository for the Germantown Press, the newspaper for Germantown, Ohio for quite a few years.  This past Thursday, the librarian at the Montgomery County Genealogy Center, found the paper at Wright State University. 

On Friday morning we set out for Wright State.  After breakfast and a wrong turn into Wright Patterson AF base we finally arrived.  We went in search of a visitors parking pass, got it and managed to locate the library.  The staff was helpful and courteous.

At long last I was able to get to the Germantown papers.  I really like it when I find a "one stop shopping" location for the newspapers in the area's I'm researching.  On Friday, I finally found that for the Montgomery, Preble & Darke county area's of Ohio.  Wright State University library fits the bill perfectly!  We will be back!

Wedding Wednesday - A 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration

  Fifty years ago, October 32, 1863, Lewis H. Zehring and Miss Elizabeth Gebhart, daughter of Emanuel Gebhart, were united in marriage by Rev. C. Albrecht.  For a half century they have resided in Miamisburg, excepting a brief period, when they resided in the country near town.

  Squire Zehring is one of the best known men in the county, and has always been active in the life of the community.  For over thirty years he served as justice of the peace, and for over forty years has been a notary public.  He served three years as county commissioner.  He is still a director in the Mutal Building Association, in which he was secretary.  For ten years he was mayor of Miamisburg, and is now a member of the Board of Education, and a cemetery trustee.  Industrious, genial and faithful, Squire Zehring counts his friends by hundreds, and though past three score and ten, is still a young man in thought and action.

  Handsome invitations have been issued to many friends for a reception at the Zehring home on Linden avenue this afternoon and evening, when an opportunity will be afforded to extend congratulations and best wishes to the happy couple, who have enjoyed fifty years of life in unbroken wedlock.

  Their two daughters, Dr. Blanche Zehring of Wells College New York, and Mrs. Laura Zehring Dosch of Elizabeth, N. J., are both at home visiting with their parents for the happy anniversary.

Tombstone Tuesday - Forgive & Forget - Doesn't Appear So!

Headstone Ann Margaret "Martha" Cook

1774-1863

  The headstone of my 5th great grandmother, Ann Margaret "Martha" Cook.  She was married to my 5th great grandfather, Christian W. Cook.  I wish I could tell you who her parents were, but I don't know.  

  Margaret dies 13 NOV 1863 at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 2 days.  She rests in Slifers Cemetery, Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.  Her husband, Christian rests in an unmarked grave next to her (according to the readings I have found).  

 Margaret left a will, dated 21 JUN 1852, Montgomery County Will book Vol. G, Pg 17.  In it she names her children - Ann Margaret, Henry, Frederick, Elizabeth (heirs of),  Mary (heirs of), John (Heirs of), Sarah, Christina and Michael.  She names one other daughter, Catherine Cook Boomershine, but leaves her and her family only $1 in her will.  

I believe the following had something to do with that decision:

  "Boomershine, Abraham & wife, Catherine vs Margaret Cook et al 28 MAR 1849. Petition for partition for 1/10th share of SE 1/4 S23 T4 R4 -160 acres owned by Christian Cook dec'd. in Jackson Twp. Left widow Ann Margaret......."

Seems Margaret didn't take lightly to that little challenge and didn't forget about it either!  I wanted the paper to prove the relationship but I'd rather have found it shown in other ways!  

Wedding Wednesday - Apple & Foust (1857)

Marriage record for Joseph Foust and Sarah Apple.  The interesting thing about this marriage record is that Sarah Apple is actually Sarah Apple Kreitzer, widow of George Kreitzer. 

George Kreitzer & Sarah Apple had married 1 MAR 1838 in Jefferson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.  They were the parents of six children.  In the spring of 1855 George was declared legally insane and dies 25 APR 1855 in Montgomery County. 

Sarah remarries to Joseph Foust 19 JULY 1857, Montgomery County, Ohio.

Its not uncommon to find women who remarry after the death of the spouse using a maiden name.  I guess it caught me off guard when I originally found it many years ago.  I just wasn't expecting her to use her maiden name so at first glance I just passed right over it.  Good thing I went back and got it. 

Sarah is the daughter of John Apple (1782-1861) and his wife, Catherine Bolender (ca1799-bef1880).

Tombstone Tuesday - John W. Kreitzer, No Longer Missing!

John W. Kreitzer & his wife, Mildred R. Kreitzer are the featured headstone today.  Work on this couple & their family is a real work in progress.

Several weeks ago Mr. Brown Eyes and I went down to Dayton to visit a good friend who had recently been released from the hospital.  After a nice visit and lunch we headed back to his home.  Having recently moved we decided to do a quick drive thru the cemetery that is located on the street behind his home.  With him being a genealogist as well,  we found it to be a nice drive.

Partially thru the cemetery we came across this stone.  I know who John W. Kreitzer's parents are, I just had no idea what had happened to him.   This headstone is not on Find A Grave so my searches there for him always went no where.

A search of death records on FamilySearch.org gave me full death dates on both, but so far no obits.  So I'll be adding them to my obit search list for Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio.  Gee, another research trip for next summer!  Break my heart!

John W. Kreitzer (16 OCT 1907 - 3 FEB 1979) is the son of John D. Kreitzer (1878-1962) and Minnie M. Stauffer (ca 1885 - ?).  Mildred's parents are unknown to me as of this writing, but she was born in 1911 and died 5 JUN 1979.

Tombstone Tuesday

Charles M. Boomershine and his wife, Mary Ann Landis Boomershine share this joint stone in Arlington Cemetery, Clay Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.   They were married 25 MAR 1894 in Wayne Township, Darke County, Ohio.   Charles and Mary Ann were of the Brethren faith.

Charles was born 6 APR 1869 to John Boomershine (1830-1914) and his wife, Malinda Brooks (1838-1902).  Mary Ann was born 8 NOV 1874 in Darke County to Joseph G. Landis and his wife, Leah Hoke. 

Charles & Mary Ann were the parents of two children, Myrtle Olive Boomershine Mack (1895-1966) and Ray Boomershine (1908-1984). 

Charles died 17 APR 1955 in Clay Township Montgomery County, Ohio and Mary Ann died 20 APR 1949 in Montgomery County, Ohio.

Charles obituary was published in The Gospel Messenger,  11 JUN 1955, Pg. 28, Col. 2 and is as follows:

Boomershine, Charles, son of John and Malinda Boomershine, wsa born April 6, 1869, and died April 17, 1955.  In 1896 he wsas baptized into the church.  On March 25, 1894, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Landis, who died in 1950.  Surviving are one daughter, one son, six grandchildren and one brother.  Funeral services were conducted by Brethren Henry T. Barnhart and James C. Boitnott.  -- Mrs. W. Russell Miller, Brookville, Ohio.

Mary Ann's obituary was published in The Gospel Messenger, 11 JUN 1949, Pg. 26, Col. 3 and is as follows -

Boomershine, Mary Ann, daughter of Elder Joseph C. & Leah Hoke Landis, was born Nov. 8, 1874, near Gordon, Ohio, and died April 20, 1949.  On March 25, 1894 she was united in marriage to Charles Boomershine, and to this union were born one daughter and one son.  On Jan. 8, 1897, she was baptized into the Church of the Brethren at Pitsburg, Ohio.  She is survived by her husband, one daughter, one son, six grandchildren, one sister and two brothers.  Funeral services were held at the Brookville Church, Ohio by Brethren Frank Shank and James H. Beahm and interment was in the Arlington Cemetery.

Bratton - Swisher Photo (ca1905)

A few years ago another Boomershine descendant contacted me stating that she had been to an estate sale and had found a box of photo's.  They were Boomershine photo's and the person holding the sale wanted to make sure that the photo's did NOT go to any relatives.  Seems there had been a family spat many years ago.  To make a long story short, she got the photo's, contacted me and sent them to me.   Alot of the images in the box are like the one above with the details about the photo on the back of the photo, written by some unknown person.  The photo's have been scanned by me and have now made their way back to the family. 

The couple above, Thomas Bratton & Ada Swisher are the parents of Agnes Naomi Bratton who married Elmer Carl Boomershine on 21 MAY 1924 in Campbell County, Kentucky.  They were the parents of four boys, Donald, Ronald, Charles and James.  If you are a descendant of this line and would like a copy of this image please contact me and I'll be happy to email you what I have. 

Agnes dies 5 JUL 1948 in Butler County,Ohio and Elmer dies 7 OCT 1971 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio.  They are buried together in Fairvew Cemetery, Gratis, Preble County, Ohio.

Services Held Here Monday
  Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the John A. Arpp Funeral Home, Germantown, for George O. Kreitzer, 79, of West Carrolton, who died Friday morning at the Delp Nursing Home, Dayton. He had been in failing health for the past year.  Pastor Paul Ressler officiated at the services and burial was in Germantown Cemetery.
  Kreitzer was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Germantown, and a retired machine operator at Moraine Box Co. in Dayton.
  Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. John Fox and Mrs. Lawrence Miller of Germantown, Mrs. Ray Phillips of Bradenton, Florida and Mrs. Gerald Zeck of Columbus; a son Firman Kreitzer of Miamisburg; a brother, Clarence Kreitzer of Farmersville; 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Wedding Wednesday

Married -  Miss Susie Stiver, who at one time was a resident of this city, now of Miamisburg, was wedded on last Thursday, to Mr. Charles Zehring, of Richmond, Indiana.  The ceremony took place at the United Brethren Parsonage and was performed by Rev. W.I.Underwood. Miss Nellie Ogden and Warren Bellman, of Miamisburg, were the attendants.  After the ceremony a wedding supper was served at Maplewood Inn, Chatauqua, and then Mr. and Mrs. Zehring left for their home in Richmond, Ind., where Mr. Zehring is connected with the Starr Piano Company.*

Whose House Is It Anyway?

In working in some photo's I found two house photo's.  One photo of the house is a full frontal view, the other a side view.

The other photo with the side view - has two people and a horse.

Both appear to be taken about the same time frame.  So tomorrow in Ft Wayne I am going to search for a city directory hoping that I can get an address for the two families who MAY have lived in the house.

We are headed to that area in a week for our research trip.  Hoping to do a drive by (I believe the house is still standing) and see if we can identify the house.  If so maybe we can identify or at least confirm my suspicions as to who the persons are in the second photo with the house.

Stab in the dark but hoping my suspicions are confirmed.  We'll see!

Amanuensis Monday - The Will of John Early (1854)

  In the name of the Benevolent Father of all, I John Earley of Miami Township in the County of Montgomery and State of Ohio, do make and publish this my last will and testament.

  Item 1st  I give and beqeath to my beloved wife Magdalena Early, all the property of any kind that I may be posessed of at the time of my decease, to use and possess as long she does remain a widow, out of which she shall pay all my just debts, and in case she should again remarry, then what shall remain of said property after deducting her lawful share of the same to be equally divided amongst my seven children with this exception that my said wife shall pay to my son Isaac Early forty dollars on his arriving to the age of twenty one years. Which is intended to make him equal with his brothers each of them having recieved a horse from me heretofore.

  Item 2nd  I do nominate and appoint my said wife, Magdalena and my son, John Early Excutor of this my last will and testament.

  In testimoney whereof I have herunto set my hand and seal this twenty seventh day of December in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred and Fifty.     /s /John Early

John Early was born 7 Jul 1776 in Pennsylvania and died 15 JUL 1854 in Miami Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.  He was married 1 Aug 1820 Rockingham County, Virginia to Magdalena Byerly.  They were the parents of 7 children - John T., David, Lydia, Joseph, Sarah, Jacob and Isaac Early.  

John & Magdalena were my fourth great grandparents.

Monday Musings....

Happy Monday!   This past weekend we took a road trip over to Medina County, Ohio for some research.   They remodeled their library a few years ago and it was SOOOOOO worth it!

I was working on a list of people that I had not been able to locate an obituary on.  Sometimes if you can't find an actual obituary you can find more information in the social pages or elsewhere in the paper.  I had about 20 pages of people (4 listings per page) that I was searching for. 

Wish I could say I found all that I went in search for, BUT I did locate about 23 or 24 that had write ups in the social pages about funeral's or something.  It wasn't a waste, we had a great lunch at a little place near the library,  sat outside, enjoyed the sunshine and just chilled together.

Our next big research road trip will be the first week of July when we are headed to Montgomery County Ohio & the surrounding counties for a week of research & fun hanging out with some of our Ohio research friends! 

The electricians are here preparing the brackets & wiring for the solar going on our roof.  Trying to type up the things I found on Saturday but the footsteps, the drills and the hammers is quite distracting.  We'll see how I do!

  Raymond "Ray" was born 30 AUG 1909 in Miami Township, Montgomery County, Ohio to Elwood Phillips(1887-1963) and his wife, Edna Martha McCune (1888-1970).  Raymond married on 11 NOV 1933 to Pauline Kreitzer (1912-1988).   They were the parents of five children - Phyllis E., Richard W., Carolyn L., Herman G., and Gary R. Phillips.

  Pauline married 11 NOV 1933, Liberty, Union County, Indiana to Raymond William Phillips (1909-1984).  They were the parents of five children, Phyllis E., Richard W., Carolyn L., Herman G., and Gary R. Phillips.  Pauline died 19 APR 1988 in Bradenton, Manatee County, Florida.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Declaration of Gratitude!

Many years ago when I began researching I had only two generations on most of my family.  Being the networker that I am using the internet became a vital tool for expanding my file.  One of my greatest "finds" was a cousin named Liz.   I've lost track of Liz for now, but I owe her a great deal. 

My family are not "keepers", there aren't a lot of family heirlooms, and only a limited amount of old photo's.  But what I have I cherish!  The two items above came from Liz.  The man in the top photograph is my ggg grandfather, John Peterman.  John was born 26 Jul 1826 in Bavaria, Germany.  He died in German Township, Montgomery County, Ohio 16 APR 1902.  He was married 21 MAR 1852 in Montgomery County, Ohio to Henrietta M. Hegele. They were the parents of 9 children -
  Henrietta, Mary P., John G., Margaret C., Anna M., Roseanne L., Ida M., William H., and Lillian B.

The photo at the top is a photograph of a portrait that Liz had of John Peterman.  The lower image is of his Declaration of Intent.  The remainder of his "papers" have not been found.  But I'm thankful that I have these.

Monday Musings

 It was a busy weekend here.  With the tax clients in and out, the son in town from Texas, the daughter over to help out with the tax business it seems we had a never ending supply of visitors to the house.  Toss in the three grandsons and you've got noise, laughter and lots of fun.

Even with all that going on I still managed to work on my cemetery project.  I've still been gathering marriage records from my Ohio lines.  Going back thru my files and locating sources, dates and sometimes even the places.  But now I've added to the mix by searching cemetery records.  Over the years I've managed to accumulate lots of cemetery readings for the cemeteries in the area's where my ancestors lived.  Combine what I have with on line cemetery readings & images and it makes for a very productive weekend.  One cemetery in Farmersville, Ohio, I did manage to get thru the first page, funny, but out of all the people on that page only four (4), were NOT in my data base.  Small community and I think I was related to almost the entire community. 

Today and tomorrow I'll be here working more on that project while I let the painter work his magic in the kitchen & breakfast area downstairs.  So far it just looks like a tornado went thru there, so I'm hoping by the end of the day today it will start looking like the kitchen I'd like spend some time in.

Mrs. Kate Apple Celebrated 91st Birthday

  Pictured above is Mrs. Kate Apple, who recently celebrated her ninety-first birthday at her home here, together with two of her great-grandchildren, Jay and Jean Apple, twin children of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Apple.
  Previous to her marriage in 1965, Mrs. Apple, nee Kate Lindemuth, taught school in this vicinity.  Her husband, John Apple, died in 1905.  Mrs. Apple's health is good and her memory excellent.

Kate Lindemuth,  married 19 MAR 1865, Montgomery County, Ohio to John A. Apple (3 FEB 1842-21 AUG 1905).  They were the parents of At least three children - Inez Olivia Apple, Ralph J. Apple and Frank Apple.  According to her death certificate (Ohio #80817) Kate was the daughter of Joseph Lindemuth & Elizabeth Fultz. She was born 12 JAN 1843 near Germantown (although some sources say Maryland) and died 29 DEC 1936 from the effects of a fall.   She & husband John Apple are buried in Germantown Cemetery, Germantown, Montgomery County, Ohio.

Permelia Frances Phillips was my third great grandmother, married to Robert Phillips - they were the parents of 6 children, four of which lived to adulthood.  Children were Margaret, Sarah, Emma, William, Charles and Euphremia.
