Monday Musings

ITs been a crazy few months here at our house.  Its always busy this time year with our tax business.  So that makes me a tax widow.  Sure, I manage the office part of the business but he does all the returs.  So while he does that I have lots of time to get stuff done on the genealogy home front.

So I've been busy - I finally made the switch from pc to a Mac, going with a laptop, which I connected to two monitors.  Sure makes transcribing easier!  But that change meant moving all my photo's and files.  Took me a about two weeks to get it all moved and get used to everything.  But its done now and I'm good.

The genealogy is always on the forefront with me, seems I always have something going on.  This Wednesday I'll be working on some Indiana research at the Allen County Library in Ft Wayne, one week from tomorrow I'll be researching German church records in Salt Lake City!   So I've used alot of my tax widow time to prep for those two trips.

And no,  I'm no closer to switching genealogy software. For now I'm just staying with Legacy in the paralells world!

How about you?  What have you been working on??

Monday Musings

Seems like the week just flew by, hard to believe its Monday already.  Worked some more on my data base, primarily looking for sources on things that were entered in the file when I first started researching 20+ years ago.

I will be speaking on the West Coast the last weekend in April and as a side trip we will be spending a few days researching at the FHL in Salt Lake City.  So prep has begun on the list of things I want to research on there as well.

Saturday was productive as well, but with a wedding to attend on Sunday and the oldest grandson being hospitalized for a short time I can't say same for Sunday.  The grandson is fine but I'll have to play catch up on that research list at a later time.

So how was your weekend?  What sort of research do you have on tap this week?

Monday Musings

It was a busy weekend here.  With the tax clients in and out, the son in town from Texas, the daughter over to help out with the tax business it seems we had a never ending supply of visitors to the house.  Toss in the three grandsons and you've got noise, laughter and lots of fun.

Even with all that going on I still managed to work on my cemetery project.  I've still been gathering marriage records from my Ohio lines.  Going back thru my files and locating sources, dates and sometimes even the places.  But now I've added to the mix by searching cemetery records.  Over the years I've managed to accumulate lots of cemetery readings for the cemeteries in the area's where my ancestors lived.  Combine what I have with on line cemetery readings & images and it makes for a very productive weekend.  One cemetery in Farmersville, Ohio, I did manage to get thru the first page, funny, but out of all the people on that page only four (4), were NOT in my data base.  Small community and I think I was related to almost the entire community.

Today and tomorrow I'll be here working more on that project while I let the painter work his magic in the kitchen & breakfast area downstairs.  So far it just looks like a tornado went thru there, so I'm hoping by the end of the day today it will start looking like the kitchen I'd like spend some time in.

How about you?  What did you work on this weekend?

Monday Musings

After finishing my project of naming, labeling, cropping & linking all my scanned images I took a day or two and pondered what to work on next.

I've got all my images sorted and stored in folders on my hard drive.  Most are sorted by surname (direct line from pedigree charts), with the exception of Vital Records (sorted under that by state & county), Newspapers and headstones (sorted by cemetery name).

When I first started to gather images I had everything just stored under the surname header it belonged to.  I decided that perhaps that needed to be modified.  So now everything is being moved so that it fits more into the patterns I want.  So ALL vital records (birth/death/marr) are all stored under vital records.  All newspapers (obits/news stories/ marriage columns) are now in one place.  The headstones have ALWAYS been under headstones.  No discussion even needed on that one.  With them all filed under the cemetery they are buried in it makes it very easy to find.  And I like it that way.

I was sort of seriously dreading this task until I did a handful and found out that the software is intuitive enough that it knows when I move the items and it goes ahead and puts the new link in place!  WOWSERS!  Worry gone!

Should be done with all the moving around by the end of this week!  Already pondering next project....

Monday Musings - Cousins!

One of the reasons I decided to blog was to share the things that I have found over the past twenty years in my researching.

I share here on the blog primarily for two reasons -
  1. To help those who may not be able to get the items I have found.  I'm very fortunate to have been able to visit many of the area's where my ancestors lived. That has allowed me to locate and acquire many original documents that perhaps are not online yet.
  2. To make contacts with those who are working on researching the same lineage and may be related.
This past week it happened again.  Another awesome cousin has found my blog!  Deb is a cousin on my Ansley/Nix line.  She's not a distant cousin, we're talking second cousins here.  Her grandmother and mine were sisters.  Deb has been gracious enough to share some awesome photo's with me!  I'm so glad she found my blog! She's just getting into genealogy so I'm happy that I'll be able to share the research I've done on our line with her.

Monday Musings - Brethren Gold Mine!

It was such a productive weekend!  I even had the time to re-arrange my office a bit and still get some other stuff done.  My husband, Mr. Brown Eye's loves to research in the census and he does a bang up job typing them in as well.  I enjoy it too, just not as much as he does.  So he did lots of census work over the weekend.

Back between Christmas & New Year's we spent some time down in Montgomery County, Ohio - where most of my mom's family came from.  She was born there so there are still cousins in the area.  Anyway one of the places where I had some digging to do was the Brethren Heritage Center in Brookville, Ohio.  A fabulous resource for all things Brethren.  While there I was told about the Brethren Digital Archives which recently came on line.

I really had not had the time to spend any serious time browsing or searching the site until Sunday, but let me tell you- I was so glad I did!  The gold mines I found there!

The link I gave you above is a "masterlink" sort of thing.  In my case I was looking for the main "newspaper" for the Brethren, which is the Gospel Messenger.  So in the alphabetical line up I clicked on the G.  It opened up the flood gates of obituaries for me!  There in digital splendor was a major portion of the Gospel Messenger in its entirety!  I don't know that it could be any better than it is.

There are some years missing but for what is available the missing is such a small portion, I can live with it.  I'll just have to make a trip back to Brookville to get the ones I can't find on line.

If you even think you might have ties to the Brethren faith with your ancestors its worth a shot to look here.  The Messenger covers all states where there are Brethren congregations and its one stop shopping, all in one informative newspaper.  I've even found some pictures.

If you've not been fortunate enough to locate any Brethren obits, this might be the time to try.  The obits I've found are full of birth, death and marriage dates & places.  Parents are named, maiden names are given.  The number of children born to the couple are listed, but as a rule children are not named unless still living with the parents.

Some of the surnames I have that are in the Brethren Church are Early, Eby, Kreitzer, Boomershine, Wampler, Garber and quite a few more!   My states of interest for the Brethren are Virginia, Ohio, Missouri and Indiana.

Monday Musings

Its been a genealogy kind of weekend.  Its always busy here at the Krugman castle (its what we call it)... with the kids, the dog, the cat, the tax clients, three grandsons, daughter & son in law, Son & partner and a house guest how can it NOT be busy?  But that's okay,  life is good and we are blessed.

Our houseguest is our genealogy friend Michael, who drove up from Dayton to share some goodies he found with me.  A neighbor of his was about to throw away several large boxes of notebooks.  She asked Michael if he would like them.  She was an avid genealogist at some time, as the boxes were full of notebooks.  In the notebooks were pages and pages of family group sheets & obituaries.  She had evidently collected all this stuff over a period of 30-40 years.  Also in one of the boxes Michael brought with him was a photo album full of very old photo's, some of them identified.  A few were the tinytype variety.  I was flabbergasted that she was willing to put these things to the curb.

So between the tax clients, the grandsons, the son moving out and everything else going on, Michael and I have been going thru some of these notebooks.  I think the greatest find so far was in the photo album.  We found a photo of Jonathan Bolender.  The cool thing is Jonathan is my GGGG Uncle,  the other cool thing is, Michael has had this same photograph in his file forever and  had no idea who it was.  This photo we found was identified as was the photo of his wife, Rebecca Durnbaugh.

So now Michael has the identity of two unknown photo's and I have two new photo's to add to Bolender file.  I've found many things this weekend in those notebooks we've been going thru, but I think finding these two photo's were the best!

Research weekend with a friend -  very good thing!

Monday Musings

Usually Monday is Military Monday but I've been away from my office it seems for days so I'm a wee bit behind.  Always seems to be more to do than we have time to get done.

Still working on the data entry from the trips we've been on.  Slowly getting a handle on it all, but this weeks focus besides getting more data entry done & working on my marriage project is prep for this weekend's trip to Ft Wayne.

Although Indiana does have quite a bit of information on line at various places, I've still got stuff I just can't seem to find answers to.  So we are off to Ft Wayne for the day.  While we are there we are having dinner with a new friend who wants to talk genealogy & cemeteries.  Imagine that!

I'm hoping to spend today getting some great posts up for the rest of the week!  The weather map seems to indicate that maybe all those 90 degree temps we've been experiencing are going to end! I hope so!

Happy Researching!

Monday Musing...

What is it about a clean office that drives one to want to "work"?

I had this idea that I MUST do something about the clutter that all those cords under my desk seem to generate. They seem to multiply like rabbits, and the longer you try to ignore them the worse they get.

SO I called up my son, asked him if he could help move a couple of printers. He agreed. We bought him breakfast on Sunday and he came over afterwards. Since my son the brain built this wonderful computer for me last year I figured who would know better about the wires surrounding all these electronics than him?

Long story short, he did move the printers, but the main hero of the day was my main squeeze Mark! Yep, dearest husband of mine, took time out from the tax catch up day and spent about an hour and a half crawling around under the desk moving & untangling wires! He's my hero - most of the wires are in one spot & now almost completely out of site! Needless to say I am thrilled!

Both of my external hard drives are now hooked up and all the wires on the top of my desk are now routed thru a slot on the back of the hutch! The only problem he didn't resolve were the three piles of papers on the desk. He left those for me to do!

But now I have a lamp for extra light when reading old wills, my small digital photo frame so I can always see my grandsons and lots of space for more papers.

Only question now is "which stack of papers do I tackle first?" ...

Be sure to check out Reflections From The Fence today- its Carol's turn for Relatively Speaking.

Happy Researching!
