Monday Musings - Brethren Gold Mine!
It was such a productive weekend! I even had the time to re-arrange my office a bit and still get some other stuff done. My husband, Mr. Brown Eye's loves to research in the census and he does a bang up job typing them in as well. I enjoy it too, just not as much as he does. So he did lots of census work over the weekend.
Back between Christmas & New Year's we spent some time down in Montgomery County, Ohio - where most of my mom's family came from. She was born there so there are still cousins in the area. Anyway one of the places where I had some digging to do was the Brethren Heritage Center in Brookville, Ohio. A fabulous resource for all things Brethren. While there I was told about the Brethren Digital Archives which recently came on line.
I really had not had the time to spend any serious time browsing or searching the site until Sunday, but let me tell you- I was so glad I did! The gold mines I found there!
The link I gave you above is a "masterlink" sort of thing. In my case I was looking for the main "newspaper" for the Brethren, which is the Gospel Messenger. So in the alphabetical line up I clicked on the G. It opened up the flood gates of obituaries for me! There in digital splendor was a major portion of the Gospel Messenger in its entirety! I don't know that it could be any better than it is.
There are some years missing but for what is available the missing is such a small portion, I can live with it. I'll just have to make a trip back to Brookville to get the ones I can't find on line.
If you even think you might have ties to the Brethren faith with your ancestors its worth a shot to look here. The Messenger covers all states where there are Brethren congregations and its one stop shopping, all in one informative newspaper. I've even found some pictures.
If you've not been fortunate enough to locate any Brethren obits, this might be the time to try. The obits I've found are full of birth, death and marriage dates & places. Parents are named, maiden names are given. The number of children born to the couple are listed, but as a rule children are not named unless still living with the parents.
Some of the surnames I have that are in the Brethren Church are Early, Eby, Kreitzer, Boomershine, Wampler, Garber and quite a few more! My states of interest for the Brethren are Virginia, Ohio, Missouri and Indiana.

Monday Musings
The year has not been off to a good start. Already this year we've had two different "flu" bugs visit with us. Luckily for me, I only got a light case of both. Not so lucky were the grandkids & Mr. Brown eyes. This is not my idea of how to start a new year.
With me having the light case on both occasions I was able to stay upright and it gave me time to work while Mr. Brown eyes was sleeping... he's not one to need a nursemaid.
I've been working on the images I scanned while I on the trip. I came home with about 85 images - mostly obits from the Brethren Heritage Center. There are about 6 or 7 more to do and those will be complete. I work on dual monitors so I can transcribe from one screen to the other, crop, name and link it very easily.
I must admit the obits from the Brethren are wonderful to work on. Most of the time they name the parents and give birth, death and marriage dates. Although they give the number of children born to the couple and how many are living its rare that you get the names of the children in the obit.
When the Brethren obits are done I'll move on to the ones for Dayton, Ohio. What are you working on?

The week between Christmas & New Years Mr. Brown Eyes always takes me away for a few days of research. This year we spent some time researching in three different locales in the area of Dayton, Ohio.
Thursday we spent at the Dayton Public Library getting obituaries using their obituary index for some of my "wants", others we had to search for. Friday we worked at the Montgomery County Records & Archive Center. Saturday we spent at the Brethren Heritage Center in Brookville.
I enjoy using all of these places to research the families I have in the Montgomery County area. Today's wedding entry I found in the Brethren Heritage Center. The Heritage center has a very large collection of Brethren periodicals, mainly newspapers. They are indexed and the staff there is very knowledgeable regarding the indexes and the collection in general. I had about 48-50 items on my to do list and the only items I didn't get were items that were in three issues that they did not have of The Gospel Messenger.
Most of the entries that day were obituaries I was seeking on the Early family out of Rockingham County, Virginia. While looking for the obituary of one of that family I just happened to notice the above under "Matrimonial". I couldn't leave it there.
Genevieve Early is the daughter of Simon P. Early (1874-1948) and his wife, Emma Wine.
You'll be seeing more of the Early family in weeks to come as I have plenty of items I want to share. They were in Rockingham County, Virginia and then migrated thru Pennsylvania (where some remained) into parts of southwestern Ohio and then into Illinois and Missouri.
Happy Researching!

Travel Tuesday - Brethren Heritage Center, Brookville, Ohio
On Saturday I was awakened by the words, "hey sleepyhead - wanna go to Brookville?" My friend Gale over at the Brethren Heritage Center had written me stating that there were quite a few Boomershine obituaries at the center and that I should come and visit.
Well, anyone who knows me knows that an opportunity to go research is very rarely passed by. So showers were taken, clothes were chosen, briefcase was grabbed and off we went!
The Brethren Research Center, located at 428 Wolf Creek Street, Brookville, Ohio is a treasure trove of Brethren information. With indexes for the Brethren newspapers - The Gospel Messenger & many more Brethren publications - the limitations on the things you can find is limitless. The staff there - know their Brethren history & resources - and are more than happy to make their knowledge yours.
They also have a book store for both new & used books, a mini museum of artifacts having to do with the Brethren faith & daily life, as well as many books & publications for area's surrounding Brookville.
The "library" is located in the midst of a small shopping center, on the lower level. Don't be deceived when you first view the entry from the parking lot - there's more there than meets the eye. The hours are Monday, Wednesday & Saturday from 10-4.
If you have Brethren in your family history especially in the area's of Montgomery, Preble & Darke County - you'll surely want to make time to visit with Gale at the Brethren Heritage Center in Brookville. You'll be glad you did!
