Wedding Wednesday - Apple & Foust (1857)

Marriage record for Joseph Foust and Sarah Apple.  The interesting thing about this marriage record is that Sarah Apple is actually Sarah Apple Kreitzer, widow of George Kreitzer.

George Kreitzer & Sarah Apple had married 1 MAR 1838 in Jefferson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.  They were the parents of six children.  In the spring of 1855 George was declared legally insane and dies 25 APR 1855 in Montgomery County.

Sarah remarries to Joseph Foust 19 JULY 1857, Montgomery County, Ohio.

Its not uncommon to find women who remarry after the death of the spouse using a maiden name.  I guess it caught me off guard when I originally found it many years ago.  I just wasn't expecting her to use her maiden name so at first glance I just passed right over it.  Good thing I went back and got it.

Sarah is the daughter of John Apple (1782-1861) and his wife, Catherine Bolender (ca1799-bef1880).

Tragedy Thursday

Woman Going Across Street Killed By Auto
Mrs. Mary Stuck, 86 Years Old, Is Victim of Accident
Resided in City Her Entire Life
Mrs. Mary Stuck, 86, of 569 S. Broadway, died in St. Elizabeth Hospital at 4:20 pm Saturday, an hour after she was hit by an auto while she was walking across the intersection of Broadway and Gale Ave.  Police were told that Mrs. Stuck became confused in the traffic.
The auto was operated by Frederick Sandusky, 610 Washington St., according to officers who investigated.  R.S. Zink, 519 Wisconsin Blvd, conveyed the injured woman to the hospital in his auto.  Policemen Broedling and Dixon tested Sandusky's car and found it to be in good mechanical order.  Sandusky was interviewed by Sergt. George Saunders at police headquarters and was ordered to report to Traffic Inspector T.C. Grundish at 9 am Monday.  That merely is a formality and he probably will not be arrested.
Mrs. Stuck was a lifelong resident of Edgemont and was widely known in that community.  She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Bolender, and was born at the Bolender home in Edgemont, Feb. 5, 1843.  Her parents died many years ago and four sisters and three brothers also preceded her in death.  She was the last survivor of a once large family.
Despite her age she was very alert for one of her years and enjoyed robust health.  She went everywhere and enjoyed life to the utmost.  It was while she was returning from the grocery that the fatal accident occurred.
Mrs. Stuck was a member of the Miami Chapel U.B. church during her entire life and had once been very active in the church.
Her husband, Peter Stuck, preceded her in death 23 years ago. Survivors include three sons, William Stuck, with whom she made her home at 569 S. Broadway, Edward and James Stuck and Mrs. Luther Nicholas.  There are also nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Monday Musings

Its been a genealogy kind of weekend.  Its always busy here at the Krugman castle (its what we call it)... with the kids, the dog, the cat, the tax clients, three grandsons, daughter & son in law, Son & partner and a house guest how can it NOT be busy?  But that's okay,  life is good and we are blessed.

Our houseguest is our genealogy friend Michael, who drove up from Dayton to share some goodies he found with me.  A neighbor of his was about to throw away several large boxes of notebooks.  She asked Michael if he would like them.  She was an avid genealogist at some time, as the boxes were full of notebooks.  In the notebooks were pages and pages of family group sheets & obituaries.  She had evidently collected all this stuff over a period of 30-40 years.  Also in one of the boxes Michael brought with him was a photo album full of very old photo's, some of them identified.  A few were the tinytype variety.  I was flabbergasted that she was willing to put these things to the curb.

So between the tax clients, the grandsons, the son moving out and everything else going on, Michael and I have been going thru some of these notebooks.  I think the greatest find so far was in the photo album.  We found a photo of Jonathan Bolender.  The cool thing is Jonathan is my GGGG Uncle,  the other cool thing is, Michael has had this same photograph in his file forever and  had no idea who it was.  This photo we found was identified as was the photo of his wife, Rebecca Durnbaugh.

So now Michael has the identity of two unknown photo's and I have two new photo's to add to Bolender file.  I've found many things this weekend in those notebooks we've been going thru, but I think finding these two photo's were the best!

Research weekend with a friend -  very good thing!
