William Mathias Klooz was born on 2 APR 1859 in Lorain County, Ohio and died 25 SEP 1930 in Liverpool Township, Medina County, Ohio.  Louisa E. Zacharias was born in 1861 and died 09 JUN 1937 in Liverpool, Medina County, Ohio.  They were married 16 FEB 1886, Medina County, Ohio.

William Mathias Klooz

  The death of William Mathias Klooz, Valley City, Ohio took place at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Huttinger, 517 Fifteenth Street, Thursday morning.  He had been in ailing health for some time.

  Mr. Klooz was born in Lorain County, April 2, 1859 and had lived in the county all his life.

  Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Louise Klooz, seven children: Miss Harriet Klooz of Detroit, Miss Alma Klooz at home, Harley of North Eaton, Harvey of Columbia, Mrs. George Huttinger of Elyria, Mrs. Claude Reusset [sic] of Valley City, and Mrs. Jerry Kritof of Elyria; eleven grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Mark Dowden of Lakewood, Ohio.

    Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at one o'clock from the home of his son, Harvey Klooz of Columbia Ohio, with the Rev. Muhly officiating.  Burial will be made in Hardscrable Cemetery.

  Mrs. Louise Miller

  Mrs. Louise Klooz Miller passed away at her home in Valley City on Wednesday night.  Mrs. Miller was born in Liverpool township in 1861 and lived her entire life there and in Columbia.  She was united in Marriage to William Klooz, who preceded her in death seven years ago.  To this usion were born six children, Alma Klooz, who passed away six months ago,  Harley Klooz of Valley City, Harvey Klooz of Columbia, Mrs. Irene Huttinger of Elyria, Mrs. Blanche Reusch of Valley city, Mrs. Gladys Kristof of LaPorte.

  She also leaves a step daughter Harriet, her husband, Frank Miller, whom she married June 7, 1932, thirteen grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers.

  Funeral services will be held Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Reusch of Valley City at 1:15 pm and at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Valley City at 1:30.  Burial will be made in Liverpool Cemetery.

Truman C. Wolf (son of Charles Wolf & Lydia E. Damman) was born in Valley City, Medina County, Ohio on 10 DEC 1911 and died 5 OCT 1973 in Medina County, Ohio.  His wife, Lucille Baker, was born in 1914 and died 7 JUN 1971, probably in Medina County, Ohio.

 I was searching for a marriage record on this couple, and it was found on the vital records microfilm at the Medina County Library Genealogy Room.  It confirmed what was originally found on FamilySearch.

Truman Wolf

Truman Wolf, 61, of 5247 Fenn Road, Medina, died unexpectedly last night of a heart attack. 

Mr. Wolf was a lifetime resident of Valley City and was employed at the Chevrolet Plant at Brook Park. 

Surviving are his widow, Emma; sons, Ronald of Niles, and Dennis, Columbus; two daughters, Mrs. Laura (James) Gardner, Medina; Mrs. Jacqueline (James) Bishop, Toledo; father, Charles and two sisters, Mrs. Eileen Reed and Mrs. Florence Hill; one brother, Gilbert, all of Valley City; four grandchildren. 

Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening in the Bauer Funeral Home, 2089 Columbia Road, Valley City. Services will be a 2 p.m. from Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Back In The Saddle Again!

Its been a while since I blogged.  I must admit I was worried I wouldn't get back to blogging.  But here I am.   Its been a busy month or so, with a kitchen remodel and our daughter announcing the arrival of a new branch to our tree in Jan 2015.

Now that all the "dust" (literally) has settled (and been removed) its time to get back on track with the genealogy.

Last weekend, we made a research trip to Medina County, Ohio.  I'm completing my work on Mark's family that were in that area.  They arrived as early as 1832 and remained there even today.  This is Mark's grandmother, Mabel Reusch's family.

Over the next few weeks I'll be blogging featuring all the "stuff" I found there as I get it all entered in my database.

William A. Abram, 78, of Parma, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1993, at Parma Community Hospital.
   He was born in Bedford and had been a resident of Medina County until 1988, when he moved to Parma.
  Mr. Abram retired in 1977 after 23 years at Ford Motor, Brook Park.  He had been a manufacturing test engineer.
  He was a member of Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church, North Royalton and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church, Valley City.  Mr. Abram was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. 
  He is survived by his wife, Mildred (nee Steck) to whom he was married 51 years; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Robert Messenger of Parma and grandson, Michael Hathaway of Columbus.
  Memorial Service:  Noon Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, 2233 Abbeyville Road, Valley City.  Pastor William Reinhardt and Pastor Jon Steingass will officiate.
  There will be no visitation.  Memorials suggested, if desired, to Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church.
  Bauer Funeral Home, 2089 Columbia Road, Valley City, is handling the arrangements.

Monday Musings

Can't believe its the "official" end of summer today?  Where did time go?  Oh well with the onset of cooler temps and more fall/winter type weather more the research day trips seem to fall by the way.  I personally get far more data entry done when its snowing outside than when its beautiful & sunny.

This week's goal is get the marriage records that I pulled two weeks ago from Medina County, Ohio all transcribed and in the computer, then make sure all my images from those same records are cropped and linked.

Tombstone Tuesday - Julia Otterbacher

 Mrs. Julia Otterbacher

   Mrs. Julia Otterbacher, 58, Valley City, died at Elyria Memorial Hospital yesterday afternoon at 4:10.

  She is survived by three sons, John of Elyria; Oliver of Cleveland and Rupert of Valley City; three brothers, John Wolf of Cleveland, Charles and Henry Wolf of Valley City and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Klein also of Valley City.

  The body will be removed to the late home this evening from the Waite Funeral Home in Valley City.  Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon from the Zion Lutheran Church in Valley City with the Rev. Lamprecht officiating.  Burial will be made in Valley City.

     OTTERBACHER - At Elyria hospital, Monday June 26, Julia Marie Otterbacher, aged 58 years.  Funeral at Zion's Lutheran Church, Thursday, June 29 at 2:30 pm; burial at Zion's Lutheran Cemetery.

A Week of Headstones

 Philip Orth

      Philip Orth was born in Kirweiler, Alsace, Europe, on June 12, 1824.  Being of Lutheran parentage he was baptized in infancy, and, according to the custom of his church, he was confirmed when he was about 14 years old.  In 1857 he was joined in holy wedlock with Miss Eva Gangloff.  This union the Lord blessed with five children, three sons and two daughters.  One daughter died in infancy, Philip Orth, Jr., of near Medina, William Orth, Liverpool, Mrs. Louise Whitten, Akron, and Albert Orth of Cleveland, together with their widowed mother  and 12 grandchildren survive to mourn their loss.

   In 1857, shortly after his marriage, Mr. Orth and his young wife left their native country and emigrated to the United States.  First they came to Cleveland where they resided for six years.  In 1862 or 63  they removed to Liverpool township, Medina County and here the deceased resided until his death, which occurred Monday morning April 15.  Thus he reached the good old age of 87 years, 10 months and 3 days.  About 50 years of this long life was spent in Medina County.  Mr. Orth was a respected citizen and a good Christian.  Soon after he came here he connected with Zion's Lutheran congrgation of which church he was an active member up to his death.

   When younger he was a member of the vestry, and for six years he was also the congregation's treasurer.  He lived thru and was helpful in making up the history of his congregation for upwards of half a century.

  The funeral was held from the house and church on Wednesday afternoon, Apr. 17, and burial was made on the congregation's cemetery where Mr. Orth has a plot.  The funeral text was II Timothy4:6-9.

If these two pictures don't prove to you that you ALWAYS have to document EVERYTHING then I don't know what will.  You can't even count on the headstone to be correct.  To my knowledge this is the original stone,  I saw no signs of any others in the area.  His wife's stone matches his.  She died in
1930.  Interesting thing - her stone shows a death date of 1930, she died in 1929.   While I believe this is the original stone, I do NOT believe it was erected at the time of the couple's death.  Perhaps someone put them up many years later???

A Pioneer Gone

  Henry C. Reusch, one of the pioneers of Liverpool township, died early Tuesday morning at his home.  Mr. Reusch had been in poor health for the past seven years caused by kidney trouble, he was 70 years of age and had been a man of great thrift having accumulated considerable property.  He leaves a family of four sons and five daughters.  His youngest daughter is very sick with malaria fever.  The funeral for Mr. Reusch will be held this Thursday afternoon at the Lutheran Church at Liverpool.  Conducted by his Pastor.

  In the name of the benevolent Father of all, I Henry C. Reusch of Liverpool, Ohio, do hereby make and publish this my last will and testament.

  Item 1. I give and bequeath all of my personal property of every description including household goods, furniture, grain, hay and provisions, fuel, wearing apparel, beds and bed clothing, and all other articles in the household including all cash on hand and all credits due me, and all stock on the farm, farming tools and wagons, buggies and all other personal estate to my beloved wife Elizabeth, hereby authorizing and enpowering her to sell the same at public or private sale, and from the proceeds to pay all bills contracted by me during my last illness, as doctors bill, funeral expenses and so forth. and the balance of said personal property ___  or proceeds of the same is to be then property of my said wife Elizabeth to do with the same as she may see fitting and proper..

  Item 2nd.  I hereby give and bequeath to my said wife, Elizabeth in liu of her Dower the farm on which I now reside and consisting of about one hundred and Thirteen (113) acres and the Fifty Five (55) acres lying on the center road in Liverpool township to Have the use of only the same during her natural life giving her the right to rent the same if she sees fitting and proper to do so.

  Item 3d.  I give and bequeth to my son Henry A. Four hundred dollars ($400.) and to my daughter Caroline Weidner Two hundred ($200.) dollars and to my daughter Lydia Urias Two hundred Dollars ($200.) to be paid to them out of my estate after the death of my said wife, Elizabeth.

  Item 4.  After the death of my said wife, I desire that the balance or residue of my estae after the bequests named in Item 3 of this instrument shall have been paid to be divided equally among my sons Henry A., Frederick G., Andrew C., and John C.,and my daughters Caroline Weidner, hannah Etzel, Louisa Mack and Elmina S., excepting however that my daughter Louisa Mack shall have one hundred and thirty dollars less than her equal share, as I have paid them the said amounts heretofore.

  Item 5th. I hereby nominate and appoint my said Wife, Elizabeth executrix of this my lst will and testament, without bonds and I desire that no inventory or appraisement be made of my personal property, and I desire that the court of Probate to omit the same pursuant to the statutee made and provided.   I hereby revoke all former wills made by me.

  In testmony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of November A.D. 1896.

Military Monday - Plane Crash!

Capt. Calvin Franklin Kemp, born 30 Oct 1931, died 19 Apr 1964, Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio.  There were several different versions of the military plane crashed that killed Calvin & his fellow servicemen.  Calvin was a third cousin once removed from my husband Mark.

I had found his death certificate (#024679 Wilmington Co., Ohio) which indicated that Calvin died in the crash of a military aircraft in a field about 6 miles NE of Wilmington, Ohio.  Usually a plane crash means there is a news story somewhere.  So I went on the hunt and promptly found the one above. 

According to his death certificate, his injuries were multiple and apparently extreme.  He lived about 4 hours from the time of the crash until his death.   The informant on his death certificate was the Air Force Base Mortuary officer, D. L. Barse.  Despite the fact that Calvin is shown as missing in the listing of deceased above, in the article below it does state that he survived but died during the night.

                       AF Probes Fatal Collision in Ohio; Landing Suspect
 Wilmington, O. (AP) - Air Force officers were still trying to determine yesterday why two C119 "flying boxcars" crashed Saturday night, killing 17 men.
  A spokesman at the Clinton County Air Force Base said it appeared that the two planes might have collided while on their approach to the air field.
  A commission from the Tactical Air Command headquarters at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia flew in yesterday to begin an immediate investigation. 
   The crash occurred shortly before 9 pm on flat farmland about five miles north of here.  Both planes were based at the Clinton County field here.
   Two survivors from among the 19 men on board the planes were reported in "fairly satisfactory" condition. 
   Originally, three survived the fiery crash, but one of those died during the night at Clinton Memorial Hospital here.
   The planes had been on a regular weekend paratroop training mission.  Nine of the men, all paratroopers, were members of the Second Special Service Group of First Special Forces, 20th Army Corps, From Ft. Hayes, Columbus.
   Others on the plane were crew members attached to the 907th Troop Carrier Group, 302nd Troop Carrier Wing, at Clinton.  Nine were Air Force Reservists and one was in the regular Air Force, assigned to the Ninth Air Force and based at Shaw Air Force base in South Carolina.
   Each plane carried a five man crew.  Four paratroopers were in one C119 and five in the other. 
   One survivor reportedly was a paratrooper who was able to get his parachute open in time.
   One plane crashed only a few hundred yards from the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Hook, who were playing cards with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bennett of Springfield.
    Hook said they heard an explosion.  He and Bennett raced to the scene in an effort to lend aid.
    "They were lying all over with their parachutes partly open," Bennette said of the victims.
   Some of the service men were burned inside the wreckage of one plane.  The other did not catch fire.

Guess What My Flip Pal Scanner Can Do?

As many of you may know I've been on the road a lot this summer. First for a month with Mr. Brown Eyes while he worked in Europe, and secondly when he returned we went on the road for a two week vacation. We are researching of course! Yesterday we were in Medina County, Ohio researching Mark's Reusch line. One of the obits had a photo attached. I promptly enlarged the image on the microfilm reader screen, placed my handy FLIP PAL scanner on the screen over the image and hit the scan button. I wasn't really sure how it would look, but so far, the image on the FlipPal screen is as clear as it can be and the text is very legible. As far as I can tell it worked! Keep in mind this was not one of the new flat screen monitors but one of the older reader printers. But heck! If it works I'll take it. Can your scanner do that? Happy Researching! Karen

Progress... At Least I think So

Been working on quite a few projects for the past few weeks.  The marriage record searches continue, I figured the other day I've added about 300 marriage dates, alot of them in Georgia marriage records - most of them from the Georgia Virtual Vault.  Bouncing around quite a bit in there also digging around for death records and pension records.  Sort of one stop shopping for Georgia records.

The other place I've been digging for marriage records is of course, Family Search, more one stop shopping once you figure out how to get around.  Much success there as well, more on Ohio than Georgia here.

The largest progress is on the data entry front - I've completed the entry on the Medina County, Ohio obituaries I pulled there.  I don't recall the total number I pulled but they are all pulled and typed in.  Some even hit the scanner for linking as well.  On to the Miamisburg, Ohio obituaries next.  So the progress on the data entry is good.  I still have quite a bit to get scanned, some land deeds & maps need to be scanned & linked.  Those will wait, I'm working on my laptop down in the dining room so I can enjoy the birds & flower gardens outside the windows & patio doors.

So progress is being made.  With July being the hottest in Michigan's history, I guess its been a great time for data entry!  Glad something good came out of all this heat!   How about you?  How is your progress on your projects??

Tombstone Tuesday - The Krugman's

Paul Krugman


Paul Krugman, 82, died Sunday in Pontiac, Mich. His wife, Mabel, is a native of Liverpool Twp.

Other survivors include one son, Melvin, of Pontiac; five grandchildren; one sister, Loretta Schmidkons, of Oberlin, and one brother, Elmer, of Elyria.

Funeral Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bauer Funeral Home, 2089 Columbia Rd., Liverpool Twp., the Rev. Marshall Cook officiating. Burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.

Services were also conducted today in Pontiac.

Friends may call at the Bauer Funeral Home beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Mabel Krugman


Mabel Krugman, 94, of Waterford Township, Michigan died Tuesday October 1, 1985 at home.

Born in Valley City, she was a Michigan resident for many years.

Mrs. Krugman was a homemaker.

She is survived by her son, Melvin of Michigan; a sister, Blanche Frambaugh of Valley City; brothers Claude Reusch of Valley City, Earl Reusch of Lodi; Five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Graveside service 11 a.m. Saturday Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Valley City, Ohio. Dr. Marshall Cook officiating.

There will be no visiting hours.

Bauer Funeral Home, Valley City, is in charge of the arrangements.

I've been working on some marriage records that I pulled on the last part of our trip last week.  They are sort of an index from Medina County, Ohio.  I say sort of - because they do lead to the actual record, but about everything you want to know is listed here on these cards.

I pulled 106 of these,  of that number 78 actually contained information that I did not have in my files.  So I consider that library day a real success!  The one pictured above is for grandparents of Mark - Paul Krugman & Mabel Reusch. 

78 out of 106 not bad for a day at the local library eh?

Wisdom Wednesday - I Know I've Said This Before But...

You really need to source your material.  I know, you hear it all the time and I know you've heard it from me.  Regardless of whether or not you ever intend to publish it you still need to source it.

I've been working on the circuit court marriage records I pulled in Medina County, Ohio last week.  I keep finding marriage dates in my data base that don't match the court records.  Luckily I've sourced about 99.7% of what I have (yes, there was a time when I didn't source some things!) so I'm okay.

Because I've sourced my materials when I do find a discrepancy I can easily determine if there is a true problem or if someone has misread a date, or used an application date as a marriage date or if there are other issues. 

Sourcing your materials - Its a very good thing!  You'll be glad you did!

Friday, Friday

Yep, today is Friday, we're down to the last few research days of our trip. Believe it or not I'm actually looking forward to going home. I'm a home body at heart. I do love going away to research but there's just something about my home!

Not only was this a research trip, it was a shopping trip. Since we bought our new house I've been slowly getting things for it. This trip I am coming home with two beautiful handmade quilts, some organic seeds for my gardens and of course some wonderful Amish soaps. It's no wonder I want to go home!

Back to the research - today we are going to the Medina, Ohio public library to search for obits & other records. My genealogy software generated my to-do list for today, 25 pages of things I'd love to find. This library has an obituary index online, so I've gone there to start my searches. Some things I want didn't appear on the index, but I'll search there for them anyway.

Next time the blog appears, I'll be back at our "castle" enjoying the goodies we brought back & hanging out with the grandkids. Enjoy your weekend!
