Review Review Review

In yesterday's Monday Musings post I mentioned that I had started to review my older files.  I also noted that I had placed the date of the last review on my folders, and that the date was 1998.

Quite a time lapse eh?

EVERY SINGLE FILE is being gone thru.  Here's what I have (and am modifying).

In my desk drawer I have the main lines that are being worked on.  There are about 45 or so of these files.  They are stored in a deep file drawer on my right side about knee height.  Very accessible for when I want to check on current stuff.   In the lateral file cabinets are files for every surname on my pedigree chart, plus some smaller ones that are of interest.  Mainly names that had many of that line intermarry with my lines. 

The ones in the lateral files are the ones that I am now going thru file by file.  Most of which have not been reviewed since 1998.  So far I've found some interesting stuff.  Stuff that didn't fit then but, as I found out, fits now. 

• Death record for Frederick Appla who died in 1893.  He is Mark's GGgrandfather.  Funny I had just noted on my master to do list that I needed that item.  Not any more! 
• Passenger list for Henry Reusch & family.  I have it recorded in my file, but no scanned image.  Score! Image found with out going back and searching again.  And as a bonus it has the FULL source citation on the back.  
• Land deed between Frederick Appla & Gotlieb Appla, his brother, selling land he inherited from his parents!  Score!  This is the one item I have connecting them to the parents, Jacob & Dorthea.  Again, I had noted that the deed had been found but did not have all the details.  At the time it didn't fit....  IT DOES NOW!  

I'm sure that as I delve into other family files I'll find more that didn't fit then but it will NOW.

Truman Wolf (1911-1973) and wife, Lucille Baker Wolf (1914-1971) married 27 SEP 1941, Liverpool, Medina County, Ohio.  Buried in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Valley City, Medina County, Ohio.

Wedding Wednesday

Grafton.  --  Mr. and Mrs. William Gest of Law Rd., Belden are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary today, with an open house for relatives and friends this afternoon and evening.
    William Gest and the former Rose Appla were married in the same house they now live, on March 30, 1910 by the Rev. Fred. W. Schuermann.
   Among the guests who will help them celebrate the anniversary will be Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gest, William Gest's brother, attendants for the wedding.
   Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gest will celebrate their 50th anniversary this coming fall.
   The Gests have two sons, William Jr., and Herman both of Belden. They have six grandchildren.
   The Gests who are 84 and 81 years of age, are members of the Belden Methodist Church and the Belden Grange.  Mrs. Gest is a member of the Belden Community Circle.
   Mr. Gest was born in Cleveland and moved to the Grafton Township area with his family when he was six years old.  Mrs. Gest was born in Belden and lived in the area her entire life.
   Mr. Gest operated the Gest Dairy farm all his life.  He has been in semi retirement for the last 15 years.

Amanuensis Monday - Will & Codicil of Henry Reusch (1897)

[This will is handwritten and in places has over writes and misspellings, none of which have been corrected.  All typed here as presented in will]

  In the name of the benevolent Father of all, I Henry C. Reusch of Liverpool, Ohio, do hereby make and publish this my last will and testament.

  Item 1. I give and bequeath all of my personal property of every description including household goods, furniture, grain, hay and provisions, fuel, wearing apparel, beds and bed clothing, and all other articles in the household including all cash on hand and all credits due me, and all stock on the farm, farming tools and wagons, buggies and all other personal estate to my beloved wife Elizabeth, hereby authorizing and enpowering her to sell the same at public or private sale, and from the proceeds to pay all bills contracted by me during my last illness, as doctors bill, funeral expenses and so forth. and the balance of said personal property ___  or proceeds of the same is to be then property of my said wife Elizabeth to do with the same as she may see fitting and proper..

  Item 2nd.  I hereby give and bequeath to my said wife, Elizabeth in liu of her Dower the farm on which I now reside and consisting of about one hundred and Thirteen (113) acres and the Fifty Five (55) acres lying on the center road in Liverpool township to Have the use of only the same during her natural life giving her the right to rent the same if she sees fitting and proper to do so.

  Item 3d.  I give and bequeth to my son Henry A. Four hundred dollars ($400.) and to my daughter Caroline Weidner Two hundred ($200.) dollars and to my daughter Lydia Urias Two hundred Dollars ($200.) to be paid to them out of my estate after the death of my said wife, Elizabeth.

  Item 4.  After the death of my said wife, I desire that the balance or residue of my estae after the bequests named in Item 3 of this instrument shall have been paid to be divided equally among my sons Henry A., Frederick G., Andrew C., and John C.,and my daughters Caroline Weidner, hannah Etzel, Louisa Mack and Elmina S., excepting however that my daughter Louisa Mack shall have one hundred and thirty dollars less than her equal share, as I have paid them the said amounts heretofore.

  Item 5th. I hereby nominate and appoint my said Wife, Elizabeth executrix of this my lst will and testament, without bonds and I desire that no inventory or appraisement be made of my personal property, and I desire that the court of Probate to omit the same pursuant to the statutee made and provided.   I hereby revoke all former wills made by me.

  In testmony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of November A.D. 1896.

Wishful Wednesday - Jacob & Dorothea Appla

Wishful Wednesday is all about ancestors on the tree that I'd love to know more about but have been basically unsuccessful in locating further information on them. 

Today's featured "Wish" is Jacob & Dorthea Appla.  I've not been able to discover much about them other than what is on the few census they appeared on and what is on their headstones.  Below is a group sheet on the family.  If you can provide me with any further information on the family feel free contact me.

I have ALL census available on this family, Any death records that could be gotten are in my files, I have been unsuccessful as of this writing in determing what happened to the daughter Mary.  There are no males carrying this name, and to my knowledge the surname has pretty much disappeared in this country.  Can you help me with my wish this Wishful Wednesday??

Roy, Willard Reusch Suffocated Sunday When Sand Slides

A Valley City father and son, Roy and Willard Reusch had their lives snuffed out, while another member of the same family, Claude Reusch, narrowly escaped a similar fate when a gravel bank in which they were digging slid down on them and their pick up truck at 4 pm Sunday.

Claude Reusch, 58, covered up to his neck in the wet sand, was extricated within a half hour. He was treated by a Valley City physician for shock before being taken to his home. On Monday morning he was taken to Medina Community Hospital for X-Rays.

Members of the Liverpool fire department, the sherriffs office and the state highway patrol worked for an hour and a half before the bodies of Roy 62 and Willard 24, were wrested from the grasp of the wet sand. County Coroner Andrew Karson attributed their deaths to suffocation.

The double tragedy occurred in August Malm's gravel pit on route 252, two miles north of Valley City and a short distance south of the Medina Cuyahoga county line.

Malm, who lives beside the pit, told Deputy Sheriff Steve Helli that the three men had asked permission to obtain a load of gravel from the bank. Although he warned them that it would have been better to wait until the next day, when the sand bank would be dryer, he gave his consent when they insisted that they needed the material yet that day.

Malm said that about 10 minutes after the trio started digging an unidentified woman came to his door and excitedly told him that she had seen the bank cave in on the men and their truck as she drove by the pit. (Appears that there are a few sentences missing here)
.........diggers shoveled out the hold from which the bodies were taken.

The slide which snuffed out the tow men's lives apparently started from the very top of the high gravel bank and caught them before they had a chance to run to safety. With such force did the gravel fall toward the bottom of the pit that the top and body of the pick up truck was badly smashed in.
Roy Reusch's body was recovered at about 5:30 and his son's 15 minutes later as County Coroner Karson and a large crowd looked on.

The bodies were taken to the Bauer funeral home at Valley City, double services having been arranged at Emanuel Reformed Church in that community on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Rev. Daniel Bodor will officiate, and Burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.

Farmers, the Reusches maintained a common home a short distance southwest of Valley City.
Roy is survived by his wife, Edith; two daughters, Mrs. Lorena Metti of Cleveland and Mrs. Lucille Bargar of Valley City; three grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Amanda Reusch of Valley City; and two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Krugman of Pontiac Michigan, and Mrs. Blanche Frambaugh of Valley City; three brothers, Claude, Clyde of Sharon Center and Earl of Homersville.

Among Willard's survivors are his wife, Mary Ann, and a five month old son, Robert

Tombstone Tuesday - Jacob Ebli of Lorain County, Ohio

A few years ago I was researching the family of Frederick Appla. The Appla surname, to my knowlege, as pretty much died out in the US. I know I've said many times that spelling doesn't count, there are many variations to every name. However this name is the one exception to that rule. People tell me to check the surname APPLE. I have never in my 20+ years of researching found this family recorded as Apple.

The name on the headstones shown here is Ebli. These are the parents of Frederick Appla (1835-1893), Gotlieb Appla (1844-1916) and Mary Appla (ca1849 - ?). Frederick Appla is my husband Mark's, great great grandfather. It is unknown what happened to Mary, if she married or died young - I have not found that information as of this writing. Gotlieb has a daughter, Frederick marries Katherine Keller and they have 6 children, five daughters and one son, Charles.  Sadly, Charles dies at the age of 9.  So there really were no male Appla's to carry on the surname.

I first found the family together on the 1860 census for Grafton Township, Lorain County, Ohio. I have not been able to locate them on the 1850 YET! 

Jacob & his wife, Dorthea are buried at the back of this cemetery, so much so that as the pictures show the headstone was almost totally obscurred from view with all the weeds etc. But we prevailed and you can see the headstone is now visiable again!
