Wedding Wednesday
Grafton. -- Mr. and Mrs. William Gest of Law Rd., Belden are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary today, with an open house for relatives and friends this afternoon and evening.
William Gest and the former Rose Appla were married in the same house they now live, on March 30, 1910 by the Rev. Fred. W. Schuermann.
Among the guests who will help them celebrate the anniversary will be Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gest, William Gest's brother, attendants for the wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gest will celebrate their 50th anniversary this coming fall.
The Gests have two sons, William Jr., and Herman both of Belden. They have six grandchildren.
The Gests who are 84 and 81 years of age, are members of the Belden Methodist Church and the Belden Grange. Mrs. Gest is a member of the Belden Community Circle.
Mr. Gest was born in Cleveland and moved to the Grafton Township area with his family when he was six years old. Mrs. Gest was born in Belden and lived in the area her entire life.
Mr. Gest operated the Gest Dairy farm all his life. He has been in semi retirement for the last 15 years.

Mrs. Julia Otterbacher
Mrs. Julia Otterbacher, 58, Valley City, died at Elyria Memorial Hospital yesterday afternoon at 4:10.
She is survived by three sons, John of Elyria; Oliver of Cleveland and Rupert of Valley City; three brothers, John Wolf of Cleveland, Charles and Henry Wolf of Valley City and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Klein also of Valley City.
The body will be removed to the late home this evening from the Waite Funeral Home in Valley City. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon from the Zion Lutheran Church in Valley City with the Rev. Lamprecht officiating. Burial will be made in Valley City.

NORTH AMHERST, April 18 - Casper Dute, a well known resident of this place died at his home this morning. He was about 76 years of age, and leaves a widow and several sons and daughters. Mr. Dute formerly lived on a farm north of here, but a few years ago moved to North Amherst where he has since resided.

I Casper DUTE', of the village of North Amherst, County of Lorain and state of Ohio, being about seventy two years of age, and being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make, publish and declare this my last will and testament. Hereby revoking and making null and void all other last wills and testaments made heretofor:
First-My will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall be paid out of my estate as soon after my decease as shall be (next two words not legible).
Second-I give and devise and bequeath to my beloved wife May DUTE, all my property both real and personal to have and to hold, absolutely for ever.
And I hereby appoint my said wife, executrix of this my last will and testament, and I request the judge of the probate court to appoint her without requiring bond.
I desire that no appraisement, and no sale of my personal property be made, and request that the court of probate direct the omission of the same.
In testimony whereof, I have set my hand to this my last will and testament at North Amherst, Ohio this 12th day of January in the year of our Lord, One Thousand Eight Hundred and ninety nine.

Obituary August Krugmann (1952)
August J. Krugman
August J. Krugman, 78, a native of Elyria , died early today in Lake County Memorial Hospital, Painesville, after a week's illness. His home was at 565 East 348th Street, Willoughby, Ohio.
Born in Elyria May 16, 1874, the son of the late George & Sophia Krugman, Mr. Krugman lived all his life here until 15 years ago. He was a member of the United Presyterian Church of Elyria and the local Eagles Lodge.
He leaves a son, George A. Krugman of Elyria; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Helsley of Ft Worth, Texas and Mrs. Josephine Filker of Menitor; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. His wife, the late, Elizabeth Krugman died March 10, 1949.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm from the Sudro-Curtis Funeral Home with the Rev. Davis O. McCarny officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday afternoon and evening.

Tragedy Thursday - A Frightful Death
Must warn you that some of the details contained in this post may be a bit hard to handle.
Newspapers in the late 1800's and into the early 1900's sometimes got a bit carried away with details.
Mr. Krugman said this afternoon that he went home to dinner, and hs wife thought she would get a quick dinner. There was a little fire in the kitchen stove and both he and she and a little child were standing beside the stove when she picked up what she thought was a coal oil can, but which may have contained gasoline, and taking off a stove lid began pouring the fluid onto the coals, when instantly the contents exploded, throwing now burning fluid in all directions and wrapping the body of the unfortunate woman in a sheet of flame. The glass in the stove was blown out, and the ignited fluid was distributed over the floor and table and blackened the walls of the room wherever it struck. Mrs. Krugman screamed in pain while her husband tried to extinguish the flames which enveloped her; in doing so he severely burned both of his hands while the little daughter is also slightly injured. An alarm of fire was turned in, but the services of the department were not needed, though medical assitance, in the persons of Drs Hale, Leonard and Hoege, was hurried to the scene. Mail carrier Lovett, who lives in the adjoining house, was the first person outside of the family to hear the cries of the woman and to rush in. He grabbed a lot of carpet and wrapped it about the woman, who was nothing more than a pillar of fire, and shortly had the flames extinguished, but the cruel flames had done their work. Most of the clothes were burned off her body, the hair was scorched and singed, the lips, nose, ears and eyebrows were burned to a crisp, and it is just possible for her to see. The doctors state that there is not a spot on her body as large as one's palm which is not horribly burned. The physicians have done everything that can be done to ease the awful pain, but express no hope that she will live, and death is but a few hours off at best. Father Griss is with the poor woman to give spitirual comfort in her last hour. The daughter who was burned is about three years old and her left hand is badly blistered.

No further information has been received, as to how the accident occurred. Mr. Krugman formerly conducted a tailor shop in this city, and both he and his wife have a large circle of friends who are horrified at the dreadful news. Later-- Mrs. Krugman attempted to start the fire with gasoline. The can exploded, and she was fatally burned. He was severely burned in trying to put out the fire, the baby was severely burned, and the house cot[sic] on fire.

Fostoria, O., Nov. 26, --Mrs.C.F. Krugman was fatally burned as a result of trying to start a fire in the kitchen stove with gasoline. There were some live coals concealed in the ashes and the flame jumped from them to the can, causing its contents to explode and cover her with the burning fluid.

At this writing, two o'clock this afternoon, Mrs. Charles J. Krugman lies at her home on South Union Street, awaiting the summons of death, burned to a crisp and moaning, directing to her husband the care of their three small children.
Mr. and Mrs. Krugman and family moved here from Hammond, indiana, two months ago, and he has been employed by Mohler, the tailor, since that time. Both parties lived here about six years ago, he marrying her, Miss Kritzer, in this city, she being a sister to Mrs. George O'Brien.

Mrs. Krugman Dies
Mrs. Charles Krugman, who was fataly burned yesterday noon by an explosion of gasoline, died at seven o'clock last night. The funeral services will be held at St. Wendeline's church Monday morning at seven thirty o'clock and the body will be taken to Elyria, where Mr. Krugman's parents live, for burial. Mrs. Krugman had hundreds of friends here who know her best as Anna Kritzer and who feel her loss most painfully. Mr. Krugman has the sympathy of the entire community in this hour of his bereavement.

ONE DYING AS RESULT OF AN AUTO ACCIDENT
Gertrude Krughman Has Not Recoved Consciousness Since Mishap
As a result of their Ford machine in which a party of four, were journeying to this city from Lorain early Thursday evening, turning turtle, at stop 7 on the green line.
Gertrude Krughman, of Fourteenth street Lorain is suffering from a fractured skull and it is not expected that she will recover. Charles Gawn, better known as "Curley." an employee of the Superior Metal Products Co., of this city, sustained a compound fracture to the right elbow and his face and hands were horribly lacerated by broken glass with which he came in contact when he struck the pavement. Two Uninjured Mr. and Mrs. Dan Brown, of Fifth street, this city, were stunned by being thrown to the pavement, but escaped serious injury when the light machine struck the green line car tracks and rolled over and over until it landed in the ditch. Brown who was driving the car, says the machine skidded into the tracks and that he lost control of it, Miss Krughman and Gawn being thrown several feet from the machine.
Bodies Missing
When Brown and his wife recovered from being stunned, they looked about for the other occupants of the car, but not finding them, supposed they were under the wrecked machine, the motor of which was still running. Passengers alighted from a green line car and the machine was righted, but the bodies were not under the car and they were soon found a considerable distance away from where the machine struck the rails.
Still Unconscious
Miss Krughman has not regained consciousness since the accident occured and it was announced at the hospital that she is suffering from a concussion of the brain from which she has little chance of recovery. Nurses who attended the unfortunate young lady, feared that her hair pins had punctured her brain, but such was not the case. Her hands were also badly cut by the flying glass, although she was not nearly as badly disfigured as was Gawn.
Different Opinions
Brown claims that he was not driving the car at a very rapid rate, but those who visited the scene of the accident do not agree with him on the particular point.
[Note: Gertrude does survive this accident although it is never updated in the newspapers. She marries Roland Dunfee, has 6 children and dies at the ripe old age of 80 in 1978.]

They Lived Where?
John & Anna Dora Dute Krugman, Mark's great grandparents lived at 349 - 10th Street, Elyria, Ohio, it seems for most of their married life. Below are two views of that address. The first from a family photograph, the second from a Sanborn Fire Map. The persons in the photo are unidentified as of this writing. Remember that the images may be enlarged by clicking on them, and then using your browsers back button return to Frame of Mind.
Pretty neat eh? I've attempted to validate the home photo, but to our dismay the home appears to be no longer standing. The address was on the back of the photo, but it is unknown to the compiler as to who wrote it there.

Tombstone Tuesday - Jacob Ebli of Lorain County, Ohio
A few years ago I was researching the family of Frederick Appla. The Appla surname, to my knowlege, as pretty much died out in the US. I know I've said many times that spelling doesn't count, there are many variations to every name. However this name is the one exception to that rule. People tell me to check the surname APPLE. I have never in my 20+ years of researching found this family recorded as Apple.
The name on the headstones shown here is Ebli. These are the parents of Frederick Appla (1835-1893), Gotlieb Appla (1844-1916) and Mary Appla (ca1849 - ?). Frederick Appla is my husband Mark's, great great grandfather. It is unknown what happened to Mary, if she married or died young - I have not found that information as of this writing. Gotlieb has a daughter, Frederick marries Katherine Keller and they have 6 children, five daughters and one son, Charles. Sadly, Charles dies at the age of 9. So there really were no male Appla's to carry on the surname.
I first found the family together on the 1860 census for Grafton Township, Lorain County, Ohio. I have not been able to locate them on the 1850 YET!
Jacob & his wife, Dorthea are buried at the back of this cemetery, so much so that as the pictures show the headstone was almost totally obscurred from view with all the weeds etc. But we prevailed and you can see the headstone is now visiable again!

Born in Lorain County, Ohio, June 29, 1849, Nathan Miller is a son of Silas and Lydia (Branch) Miller. The family are of New England stock. His grandfather, Ephraim Miller, was born in Masssachusetts, and came out to Ohio at the advanced age of eighty-six, and lived to be ninety-three. The maternal grandfather, Nathan Branch, was a native of New York state, lived for a number of years in Ohio, but finally moved to Michigan where he died. Nathan Branch was both a farmer and physician. Silas Miller was born in Massachusetts, Aprill 2, 1802 and died June 1, 1883. He came from Medina County, Ohio in 1839, took up a farm, afterwards sold it and moved to Russia Township in Lorain County in 1851, where he acquired land at $10 an acre.
After two years he sold his farm for $25 an acre and his nextr home was on a farm in Amherst, and in 1864 he moved to Wellington Township, where he established his permanent home on a farm of 174 acres and lived there until his death. Silas Miller married for his first wife, Cynthia Holcomb, and they were the parents of three children, one of whom is still living. He was married in Medina County to Lydia Branch, who was born in 1809 and died in April, 1886. By that union there were five children, and the two no living are Lucinda Whitehead, wife of a gardener in Penfield Township of Lorain County; and Mrs. Nathan Miller. Both parents were members of the Congregational Church and Silas Miller was a republican in politics.
Nathan Miller acquired his early education in the district schools at Amherst and at Wellington. He grew up on a farm, took to that vocation naturally, and though he started out on a modest scale he has acquired a
prosperity that speaks well of his persistent industry and his good judgement. He now owns 475 acres of land, including his father's old homestead. He bought out the other heirs to this place for $8,150 and for
many years has conducted his farming operations on a broad and extensive scale. While engaged in general farming he also conducts a dairy of about forty cows, and has altogether some eighty five head of cattle. He
specializes in the thoroughbred Holstein. In the course of his many years of residence in Wellington Township Mr. Miller has effected numerous improvements, and he and his family now reside in a very fine country home.
In 1883 he married Miss Elizabeth Dute, a daughter of Casper Dute, who was born in Germany, but spent his active career as a farmer in Amherst Township. Mr and Mrs. Miller had nine children: Herbert C. who lives on his father's farm, married Blanche myers, and they have three children, Grace, Harold and Harriet E.; Laura, wife of Don Barber, who is employed in the post office at Wellington, and they have one child, Robert; Minerva, who is a typist and makes her home with her father; Rollin, at home; Lida, widow of
A.L. Bacon regerence to whom is made on other pages; Clara, who married William Warren, has one child, Ralph and lives on a farm in Russia Township; Archie at home; Wesley at home; and L.G. who is attending school. The family are members of the Baptist Church and in politics Mr. Miller is a Republican.

Tragic Thursday - The Death of Nathan Miller (1923)
NATHAN MILLER, 74, INSTANTLY KILLED ON RAIL CROSSING
WELLINGTON - Apr. 21. A dangerous Maygar street railroad crossing claimed another victim yesterday afternoon when Nathan Miller, 74, was struck and killed by an east boung Big Four Flyer about four o'clock.
TRAPPED ON TRACKS
Mr. Miller was driving a horse and wagon and as he approached his view to the west was obstructed by a string of cars. A train was going west, and he waited for it to go by then drove on the tracks. When the impact took place both Mr. Miller and the horse were instantly killed.
The deceased lived on Courtland avenue and was a lifelong resident and was well and favorable known throught this vicinity. He is survived by his wife and nine grown up children.
Funeral arrangements have not be arranged yet. [The article does continue discussing the crossing and how dangerous it was and the fact that others had been killed there in the same way. Since there was no further discussion on Nathan I didn't find it reasonable to include it here.]

John & Anna Dute Krugman were the great grandparents of my husband, Mark.
