Monday Musings

I've been going over some of my lists - stuff that I need to focus on.  I discussed my list making last week in my "Overwhelmed"series.  So much I want to do and so little time to get it done.  Seems like when you get one done you come up with another project another list that you just need to work on.

I was in Ft Wayne at the Allen County Public Library researching for a few days this past week.  Can't say I broke down any major brick walls but I did find some things.

Today is Thanksgiving Day here in Canada.  We are here while Mr. Brown Eyes is on a job assignment for Ford.  In a very nice apartment here with very good wi-fi so the research and blogging can continue.  Sure beats a hotel!  Many of the comforts of home here, just on a smaller scale.  Either way I'm just thankful that I have the opportunity to travel and be with him where ever it may be.

I'm planning on writing a few blog posts today,  at least one focusing on how to make the lists with my genealogy software.

Just Another Day

I've spent the past few days working on learning how to edit my photo's in Picasa3.  Not that difficult but different than what I have been used to in the past.  A bit of a challenge but manageable.

Right now I am working on the SHANKLIN images I pulled at the Hopkinsville Public Library while we were there the end of December.  Editing the photo's, transcribing the obits and them moving them and linking them to their persons.  Time consuming but well worth the effort.

Little by little, one byte at a time it all gets done!  With tax season kicking in this weekend, I'll have plenty of time to work on this project while Mr Brown Eyes does taxes.  Managing the office & phone is nothing compared to his job.  So maybe I'll get this project done before 2015?

And The New Year Begins...

Today's goal is basically clean up the office.  During the holidays we made a mini trip down to Kentucky,  my younger sister, Sheila, lives in Kentucky.  So we took mom for a visit with Sheila and we slipped away to the Hopkinsville Public Library, which is in Christian County, Kentucky.

I've been working on my own personal lines for quite a while so I've decided to take a break and work on some of Mark's.  His SHANKLIN & MORRIS lines were in Christian County so we decided to see what we could find.  The library has a really nice collection of newspapers on microfilm.  We found tons of obits, and using the Flip Pal Scanner we managed to walk out with only two pieces of paper.  NICE!

There is also a very large card file cabinet loaded with obits from the local paper.  We found quite a few there as well.  There were a lot that I found in the newspapers that were not in the card file.  So be sure to always check both.

One of the highlights of the trip was that we found the obituary for Mark's gggg grandfather, Edin Morris who dies in 1879.  AWESOME!

All total I think we came home with about 125 obits, and only two pieces of paper.  Cleaning up the office today, is a lot of small stuff, ditching receipts from Christmas, filing bank papers, scanning some Christmas cards that had photo's on them and just general cleaning stuff.

Up Up And Away.... Well Sort Of

One of several newspaper clipping found in photo album of Mr. Brown Eye's grandmother, Dorothy Shanklin Ligon Trott.  Date & paper unknown.  Dorothy was an avid flyer, logging many miles in the air.  She flew with the 99ers, a ladies flying group.  One of her favorite flying times were the races that she participated in.  At this point she was residing in Lake Angelus, Michigan.

Wedding Wednesday - Shanklin & Tillman (1822)

 This marriage record from 1822, actually has three actual parts.  The first part, at the top, is the marriage bond, the middle part is George Tillman, father of the bride giving his consent.  The third and bottom part is the actual marriage record stating that the two were united in marriage on the 19th of May 1822, Christian County, Kentucky.

Fielding Shanklin (1796-1871) and Mary Polly Tillman Shanklin (1796-1890) were the parents of 7 children - Lucinda, George, Elizabeth, William H.*, Sarah C., Robert A and Nancy P. Shanklin.

Fielding and Nancy are Mark's 4th great grandparents and are buried together in the Goshen Road Cemetery, Toddy County, Kentucky.

T.W. Morris Rites Saturday Afternoon

Funeral services for Thomas W. Morris, 66, who passed away Thursday morning will be held Saturday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, at Westminister Presbyterian Church. The Rev. W. B. Holmes will conduct the last rites, and the balcony of the church will be reserved for the colored people who were the employees and the friends of the deceased. The remains will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery.

Mr. Morris, who had been superintendent of the Hopkinsville Water Company since its organization 39 years ago, subcumbed to a heart attack at his home at Walnut and seventeenth Streets. He had been in poor health for some months but his passing was entrely unexpected, and came as a terrible shock to his family and host of friends. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ella Hurt[Hurst] Morris, and by two daughters, Mrs. Edith Cook, of this city, and Mrs. J.D. Ligon of Detroit, Mich., and by one sister, Mrs. Ed. O'Brien, of Hopkinsville.

Relatively Speaking - Distractions

Today is our Relatively Speaking day, Cousin Anne is up today over at Gene Notes and she does a nice piece on distractions. Stop on over for a read, I'm sure she'd love a visit & comment.

I decided today to follow Anne's lead - distractions seem to be a major part of my life these days. I've been working more on my prep for both the Ft Wayne trip on the 4th and our vacation/research trip to Pennsylvania on the 14th. Excited as I am about both sometimes I do need to come up for air.

Late yesterday as I was digging around doing some straightening I came across an estate file. I've always got a folder of "data entry/scanning" that needs to be done. It seems I never remember what is in the folder so its like Christmas when I go in & pull out some stuff to work on. Yesterday's find? The estate of Edward Shanklin (1765-1826)! Edward is Mark's 5th great grandfather, so finding his estate in that pile was a very good thing. I immediately got the images transcribed & linked into my Legacy software. Aren't scanners a GRAND thing!?!?!?!

Why can't all estates be this easy - "To my five children.." AND NAME THEM BY NAME?!?

In the estate of W.H. Shanklin, 1914, Christian County, Kentucky, he names each of his five children by name when leaving them an inheritance. A great find.

Happy Birthday Mom!

I have to say that my mother in law, "boots" was one of the most impressive women I have ever met.


She's the red head to your left, the goofy looking couple next to her is my husband Mark & myself. The photo was taken Sept. 9, 1977 at our wedding reception.


When she & I first met it was not instant attraction. She had called me months earlier when I refused to see her son. Seems he was driving her crazy. Anyway to make a long story short, despite our differences we became friends.

A wee bit eccentric maybe, but she had a passion for her horses, all animals and her family.

She was born Dorothy J. Ligon in Detroit in 1936, oldest child of Robert G. Ligon & Dorothy Shanklin Ligon, and died Aug 10, 1979 in Sarasota, Florida. She is part of the Ligon family that traces its roots back to the great beginnings of this country in early Virginia. Her other family lines, Shanklin, Winstead, Eudaley, Morris, Northingington, Metcalf, Hurst & more, offer me probably more research opportunity than most people could ever want. The walls of the Virginia Historical Society have portraits of her ancestors that any genealogist would drool to have.

I miss her and even though she is not my "mom" she did influence the way I look at some things. Fiercely honest with her opinions, standing for things she believed in - those are things I will remember about her forever. I wish she could see her three great grandsons, what a great time she would have had teaching them to love animals as she did. I'll not ramble on, below are some photo's of her I thought I'd share!
